1B | Adam LaRoche | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson said the club is still optimistic that they can re-sign 1B Adam LaRoche. "I thought there were some positive signs from (General Manager Mike Rizzo) that he thought we could get something done before Christmas," Johnson said. "Adam knows we want him back." The Nats are holding firm on their two-year deal to LaRoche, and LaRoche turned down the proposal of adding an option for a third year. A team that loses out on free-agent OF Josh Hamilton (Rangers) may up their offer to LaRoche, which may be why he's still holding out.

Second Baseman

2B | Ian Kinsler | Texas Rangers | Fantasy

A move to the outfield for Kinsler has not been talked about.

SS | Jean Segura | Milwaukee Brewers | Fantasy
Milwaukee Brewers SS Jean Segura is still playing winter ball in the Dominican Republic after his 2012 season started in February of this year, but the Brewers are not worried about overworking their prospect. Segura's team in the Dominican will play through Friday, Dec. 21. He hit .328 with 22 runs scored, 20 RBIs and nine stolen bases in his first 31 games in winterball. Segura will enter the 2013 season as Milwaukee's starting shortstop.

SS | Cliff Pennington | Arizona Diamondbacks | Fantasy
Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers said SS Didi Gregorius will compete with SSs Willie Bloomquist and Cliff Pennington for the job at shortstop in spring training. "If he had to go back to Triple-A, I don't think it's such a bad thing. I think Triple-A at-bats would be good for him. Fortunately, we're in a situation where we've got depth at that area. Long term, having a guy like him and (Triple-A shortstop) Chris Owings, we've got two, I think industry-wide, two of the best young middle infielders in the game," Towers said about Gregorius. One talent evaluator said Gregorius could play in the big leagues right away.

OF | Nick Swisher | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy

The Texas Rangers remain optimistic that they have a good chance to re-sign OF Josh Hamilton. "My feelings about Josh haven't changed from Day 1," general manager Jon Daniels said. "I think we have been consistent. We want Josh back and always have. It has nothing to do with who is still on the market and who is off the market. We've maintained communication and the relationship is good. We'd still like to work something out but I can't handicap it."

OF | Justin Upton | Arizona Diamondbacks | Fantasy
The Arizona Diamondbacks are expected to hold onto OF Justin Upton after completing a trade Tuesday, Dec. 11, that netted them SS Didi Gregorius, RP Tony Sipp and 1B Lars Anderson. SP | Jeremy Guthrie | Kansas City Royals | Fantasy,
Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost said the No. 5 spot in the starting rotation will be open heading into spring training. "We'll open it up," Yost said. "Our goal is to put five guys out there that give us a chance to win every day. We've got four of them right now with Wade, James, (Ervin) Santana, who we think is going to be tremendous, and Jeremy Guthrie."

SP | Brandon McCarthy | Arizona Diamondbacks | Injury, Fantasy,
Arizona Diamondbacks SP Brandon McCarthy (head) said he's had no setbacks from brain surgery after being hit by a line drive off the bat of Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SS Erick Aybar. "I was sort of hesitant as to what I could do or what I was capable of, and then once they pushed me through it, I realized actually I think I'm fine," McCarthy said. "Ever since that day, I haven't been restricted by anything. I've felt no symptoms. Really it's become as much of a non-factor as something that major can be. I've resumed full workouts with no limitations. Haven't had even the slightest hint of a setback." McCarthy is under no physical limitations as spring training approaches.

SP | Joe Blanton | Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim | Fantasy,
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Joe Blanton will make $6.5 million next year and $7.5 million in 2014. His club option is worth $8 million with a $1 million buyout for the 2015 season. he can make an extra $500,000 per year; $100,000 for 180 innings. $200,000 for 190 innings and $200,000 for 200 innings.

SP | Trevor Bauer | Cleveland Indians | Fantasy,
Cleveland Indians general manager Chris Antonetti said SP Trevor Bauer will factor into the team's plans for next season, but it's unclear if he'll make the team out of spring training. "We feel we're getting a young pitcher with a ton of potential," Antonetti said, "a guy who we feel has a chance to pitch at the top of the rotation once he develops and a guy who we had longstanding interest in."

SP | Roberto Hernandez | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy,

SP | Rick Porcello | Detroit Tigers | Free Agents, Fantasy,

The Tigers want to bring Sanchez back, but not at $90 million. They'd like to re-sign him for between $45 and $60 million, but that's unlikely to happen. It's unclear if Detroit is pursuing free-agent pitchers other than Sanchez.

Relief Pitcher

RP | Mike Adams | free agent | Free Agents
The Washington Nationals, Toronto Blue Jays, Philadelphia Phillies, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers are interested in free-agent RP Mike Adams (Rangers). He could sign in the next few days.

RP | Chang-yong Lim | Chicago Cubs | Injury, Transaction

RP | Ryan Madson | Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim | Injury, Fantasy,
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ryan Madson (elbow) wants to have the chance to close out game right when the season starts, even though he may not be in full swing following his rehab from Tommy John surgery. "If there's a situation where it's back-to-back and it's not allowed, then that's fine. But if I'm available, I want to pitch in the ninth inning because that's where I think I've tuned my mentality. I've tuned just everything about the way I pitch to that inning. It is a lot different inning than the eighth," Madson said. He's currently making around 120 throws from 120 feet, which is on schedule in his recovery. He doesn't have a date set to resume throwing off a mound, but he hopes it'll be in early January, which will make him ready for spring training and opening day.

RP | George Sherrill | Kansas City Royals | Injury,
Kansas City Royals RP George Sherrill (elbow) has no timetable for when he will return following Tommy John surgery in May of this year. He made just two appearances for the Seattle Mariners this past season.

He was dominant in more than half of them, and he faltered in only one, giving up five runs and five hits Nov. 24. Rondon rebounded his next time out with a perfect inning and a save. He has only five walks and 14 strikeouts this winter over 12 2/3 innings, and just three of those walks have come over his last 10 outings. There will be no innings limit on him in winterball, but they don't want to overwork him. "I'll get a pulse for him in spring training, what I feel about him, his makeup," manager Jim Leyland said. "The one thing that (former closer Jose) Valverde was very good at is he could turn the page pretty quickly, and a closer has to be able to do that. When you get a young guy, I don't know for sure how a guy's going to respond. You don't know if you give somebody an opportunity, and those things happen."

RP | Mariano Rivera | New York Yankees | Injury, Fantasy,
New York Yankees RP Mariano Rivera (knee) said promises that he'll be ready to go by opening day next year. "Oh yeah, I don't see why not," Rivera said. "We have at least three months, four months to that point. I'll be ready." Rivera expects to be 100 percent healthy soon, but he has yet to resume throwing. "My arm is good. Everything else feels good," he said, "so I will start throwing the baseball pretty soon."
