by KFFL Staff on February 3, 2014 @ 05:49:49 PDT

First Baseman

1B | Yonder Alonso | San Diego Padres | Fantasy
San Diego Padres C Yasmani Grandal, 1B Yonder Alonso, OF Carlos Quentin and OF Cameron Maybin may see their activities limited in spring training after they experienced injuries during the 2013 season.

1B | Chris Davis | Baltimore Orioles | Fantasy
Baltimore Orioles hitting coach Jim Presley said Saturday, Feb. 1, the club wants 1B Chris Davis not to try too hard to duplicate his big numbers from a year ago. "Is he going to repeat that? That is hard to do," Presley said. "We just want to keep him on an even keel. Let's hit 30, driving in 90 to 100 and help our club win. I'd rather him drive in big RBI late in the ballgame than hit 55 and drive in 130. I really would. I'd rather him hit 33, drive in 95 and have some big hits for us. It's going to be hard for him to repeat that."

1B | Brandon Belt | San Francisco Giants | Fantasy
San Francisco Giants general manager thinks the team will avoid an arbitration case with 1B Brandon Belt and then expand contract talks in spring training.

Second Baseman

2B | Emilio Bonifacio | Kansas City Royals | Fantasy
With the designation for assignment of 2B Emilio Bonifacio, the Kansas City Royals may turn to IF Pedro Ciriaco to fill the middle-infield gap.

2B | Ryan Flaherty | Baltimore Orioles | Fantasy
Baltimore Orioles hitting coach Jim Presley indicated Saturday, Feb. 1, that he wants 2B Ryan Flaherty to work on hitting to the opposite field. "Is (Ryan) going to be a .360 (on-base percentage) guy? I don't think so. I think he has more juice to where he can utilize that, but we need him to have a two-strike approach and hit the ball the other way and we are going to stress that in spring training," Presley said.

2B | Marco Scutaro | San Francisco Giants | Injury, Fantasy,
San Francisco Giants 2B Marco Scutaro (finger) is pain-free after having surgery to insert a pin in his finger after the season, and he's been strengthening his core in the offseason. The Giants plan to limit him early in spring training, and the team also plans to take it easy on OF Michael Morse (wrist) and SP Tim Hudson (ankle).

SS | Dee Gordon | Los Angeles Dodgers | Fantasy
Los Angeles Dodgers SS Dee Gordon has added considerable muscle to his frame, and he is up to 170 pounds, manager Don Mattingly said Saturday, Feb. 1.

SS | J.J. Hardy | Baltimore Orioles | Free Agents
Baltimore Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette said the team will try to sign SS J.J. Hardy to a contract extension before the start of the regular season. Hardy will be a free agent after the 2014 season.

Third Baseman

3B | Will Middlebrooks | Boston Red Sox | Fantasy
Even if the Boston Red Sox re-sign free-agent SS Stephen Drew, they are not expected to trade 3B Will Middlebrooks, who has drawn interest from the Miami Marlins. Middlebrooks and Xander Bogaerts would share time at the hot corner in this situation, with Middlebrooks also seeing time at first base in order to keep his bat in the lineup.

3B | Manny Machado | Baltimore Orioles | Injury, Fantasy
Baltimore Orioles 3B Manny Machado (knee) has been cleared to resume baseball activities such as hitting, running outside and fielding ground balls. However, he plans to alter the way he runs in an effort to stabilize his left knee. "It's all muscle memory," he said. "I've ran my entire life how I did last year, and obviously I had two injuries in the past two years, and that's definitely not right. And from what I saw (while analyzing video Friday), it's a fix, it's an easy fix, but it's something that's more mental than anything else. It's more of getting the right positioning and getting my gluteus and quads (involved)." Machado is more than a month ahead of schedule with his rehab and hopes to be cleared at his next appointment in about six weeks so he can begin playing spring training games.

3B | Pablo Sandoval | San Francisco Giants | Fantasy
San Francisco Giants 3B Pablo Sandoval was not injured when he was seen limping into first base during a Venezuelan Winter League game last week. The Giants checked in with trainers after he left Game 3 of the championship series in the eighth inning. "It's evident he's worked hard," manager Bruce Bochy said. "We don't have to spend all spring trying to get him where we want him. The focus can be on getting ready for baseball. We'll be ahead of the game, not like where we were last year."

3B | David Freese | Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim | Transaction, Fantasy
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim avoided arbitration with 3B David Freese Friday, Jan. 31, by agreeing to a one-year, $5.05 million deal. Freese was asking for $6 million from the team.

C | Buster Posey | San Francisco Giants | Fantasy
San Francisco Giants C Buster Posey has added 10 pounds through his offseason training program in the hopes that it will keep him from wearing down during the second half of the season. Posey estimates that he currently weighs between 212 and 214 pounds.

C | Yasmani Grandal | San Diego Padres | Injury, Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
San Diego Padres C Yasmani Grandal (knee) could be ready in time for Opening Day, according to general manager Josh Byrnes. "He says he feels good and he certainly looks good," Byrnes said, adding that he will be held back during spring training even if he feels 100 percent. If Grandal is not ready for the season opener, C Nick Hundley is expected to start behind the plate.

C | Matt Wieters | Baltimore Orioles | Free Agents, Fantasy
Baltimore Orioles general manager Dan Duquette said the team did not try to trade C Matt Wieters in the offseason. Wieters is a free agent following the 2015 campaign and has resisted talks of a contract extension.

C | A.J. Ellis | Los Angeles Dodgers | Transaction
Los Angeles Dodgers C A.J. Ellis avoided arbitration by signing a one-year deal worth $3.45 million. The deal includes incentives based on starts and plate appearances.

C | Alex Avila | Detroit Tigers | Transaction, Fantasy
The Detroit Tigers avoided arbitration with C Alex Avila Friday, Jan. 31, by agreeing to a one-year, $4.15 million deal. The deal includes a $5.4 million option for the 2015 season with a $200,000 buyout. The option will vest if Avila is an All-Star, in the top 15 in MVP voting or is a Silver Slugger.

OF | Nelson Cruz | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
According to a major league source, four or five teams could be interested in free-agent OF Nelson Cruz (Rangers).

OF | Nick Markakis | Baltimore Orioles | Fantasy
Baltimore Orioles hitting coach Jim Presley likes the versatility of OF Nick Markakis, and he indicated Markakis could hit anywhere from leadoff to fifth in manager Buck Showalter's lineup. "You can hit Nick first, second, third, fifth, it doesn't matter," Presley said Saturday, Feb. 1. "He's that good a hitter and his health issues are out of the way. He is in pretty good shape. I don't mind wherever Buck wants to hit him."

OF | Matt Kemp | Los Angeles Dodgers | Injury, Fantasy
Los Angeles Dodgers OF Matt Kemp (ankle) said Saturday, Feb. 1, that he feels he is one of the best players in baseball. He has started jogging, but he is uncertain when he'll start running or when he will play in his first game. He also has been hitting every day, and been throwing.

OF | Nolan Reimold | Baltimore Orioles | Injury
Baltimore Orioles OF Nolan Reimold (neck) said this is the healthiest he has felt since 2012. He said he'll have no restrictions in spring training.

Starting Pitcher

SP | James Shields | Kansas City Royals | Fantasy,
Kansas City Royals SP James Shields said he would be willing to talk with the team about a contract extension. "Yeah, I'd definitely be open-minded to it, for sure," Shields said. "A player in my position, when I have one more year left before free agency, I'm definitely open to it. I mean, I like Kansas City, I like the organization and I like the direction we're going."

SP | Alexi Ogando | Texas Rangers | Injury, Fantasy
Texas Rangers SP Alexi Ogando (shoulder) has spent the offseason concentrating on strengthening his shoulder. The 205-pound right-hander experienced no problems during his winter workouts and is hoping to make it through an entire season without suffering an injury for the first time in his career. Ogando had three trips to the disabled list in 2013 because of biceps and shoulder issues.

SP | Jason Hammel | Chicago Cubs | Transaction, Fantasy,
Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel, who signed a one-year deal worth $6 million on Friday, Jan. 31, may have seen his market value hampered by elbow concerns. Hammel missed part of last season with elbow injuries.

SP | Matt Garza | Milwaukee Brewers | Fantasy,
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim offered Milwaukee Brewers SP Matt Garza a contract similar to the one he signed with Milwaukee, but sources indicate owner Arte Moreno did not leave the offer on the table for very long and pulled it before Garza could answer. The deal was worth around $50 million for four years.

SP | Tim Hudson | San Francisco Giants | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy,
San Francisco Giants general manager Brian Sabean envisions SP Tim Hudson as the No. 3 starter in the starting rotation behind SPs Matt Cain and Madison Bumgarner, but added that it is up to manager Bruce Bochy and pitching coach Dave Righetti to determine the official rotation order.

SP | Doug Fister | Washington Nationals | Transaction, Fantasy,
Washington Nationals SP Doug Fister avoided arbitration by signing a one-year deal worth $7.2 million. The deal includes $100,000 in incentives based on innings pitched.

SP | Archie Bradley | Arizona Diamondbacks | Free Agents, Fantasy,
The Arizona Diamondbacks may rely on SP Archie Bradley rounding out the rotation out of spring training, since they aren't enamored with free-agent SPs Ubaldo Jimenez (Indians) or Ervin Santana (Royals). However, Bradley hasn't pitched above Class AA and isn't currently on the 40-man roster, but he'll get a chance to compete for the fifth rotation spot. He's generally regarded as one of the top two or three pitching prospects in all of baseball. Bradley will mainly be competing with SP Randall Delgado this spring. Service time for Bradley and an innings limit will be heavily weighed by the team. General manager Kevin Towers wants to aim for 175 to 180 innings for Bradley this year.

Relief Pitcher

RP | Fernando Rodney | free agent | Free Agents,
The New York Yankees could show interest in free-agent RP Fernando Rodney (Rays) to ensure they have a backup in case something happens to RP David Robertson.

RP | Neftali Feliz | Texas Rangers | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Texas Rangers RP Neftali Feliz remains the front-runner to be the team's closer, ahead of RPs Joakim Soria and Tanner Scheppers. During the offseason, Feliz worked with scout Mike Anderson in the Dominican Republic on some mechanical adjustments and tightening up his repertoire. In 10 appearances for Toros del Este of the Dominican Winter League, he posted a 2.79 ERA over 9 2/3 innings, with only two walks and 11 strikeouts. Feliz said he felt better during the latter portion of his time playing winter ball and at one point was clocked at 98 mph on the second day of back-to-back outings. At the end of the 2013 season, he was regularly throwing in the low 90s.

RP | Jesse Crain | Houston Astros | Injury, Fantasy,
Houston Astros RP Jesse Crain (biceps) said Saturday, Feb. 1, that he is unlikely to be ready for the start of the regular season. He will throw Monday, Feb. 3, for the first time since surgery on his right biceps in October. "That would be a huge bonus if I was ready (for the start of the season)," Crain said. "I'm not planning on that. I would be surprised if I was ready by then." Crain said a best-case scenario would be to pitch in a couple of spring games nad only miss a couple weeks of the regular season.
