Fantasy Baseball Daily Offseason Update: Monday, Dec. 9

by KFFL Staff on December 9, 2013 @ 06:06:20 PDT

First Baseman

1B | Ike Davis | New York Mets | Free Agents, Fantasy
In the wake of the New York Mets signing OF Curtis Granderson, the team may redouble its efforts to deal either 1B Ike Davis or OF Lucas Duda. The team may find a shortstop on the trade market since not much is left on the free-agent side.

1B | Logan Morrison | Miami Marlins | Fantasy
The Tampa Bay Rays are reportedly among the teams interested in trading for Miami Marlins 1B Logan Morrison.

1B | Garrett Jones | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
Updating a previous report, the Miami Marlins are close to finalizing a two-year deal with free-agent 1B/OF Garrett Jones (Pirates) worth $7.75 million, according to multiple sources.

1B | Corey Hart | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
The Colorado Rockies had interest in free-agent 1B Corey Hart (Brewers) and OF Mike Morse (Mariners), but both fit better at first base.

It is unlikely Colorado ends up being a destination for either player following the deal with Justin Morneau, as there is just no spot for either of the two veterans.

Second Baseman

2B | Omar Infante | free agent | Free Agents
The Kansas City Royals are interested in signing free-agent 2B Omar Infante (Tigers). The Royals likely will have to compete with the New York Yankees among other teams to sign Infante.

2B | Howie Kendrick | Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim | Fantasy
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 2B Howie Kendrick is among the players who could be traded during next week's winter meetings.

2B | Robinson Cano | Seattle Mariners | Transaction, Free Agents, Fantasy
The Seattle Mariners agreed with free-agent 2B Robinson Cano (Yankees) to a 10-year, $240 million deal.

Cano leaves a hitter's paradise for a hitter's nightmare in Safeco Field. His power translates anywhere, though. In fact, he hit more homers on the road last season. He has hit .309 with four homers and 20 RBIs in 152 at-bats in Seattle during his career. You can expect a slight decline in power. He also has very little around him in the form of protection. Owners will have this in the backs of their minds on draft day. It's possible he'll fall in drafts because of such, but it's not a good idea to value him as an early first-round pick anymore.

Shortstop

SS | Stephen Drew | free agent | Fantasy
The New York Mets have approximately $13 million in payroll flexibility remaining, meaning it is unlikely that they will be able to sign free-agent SS Stephen Drew (Red Sox).

SS | Javier Baez | Chicago Cubs | Fantasy
The Chicago Cubs believe in SS Javier Baez as a shortstop, but they'll move him around in spring training. He could be the starting second baseman by the end of June.

Baez has big power and will be drafted in a lot of leagues. If he earns regular playing time, he could be a great mid-season addition to your fantasy team.

Third Baseman

3B | Chase Headley | San Diego Padres | Fantasy
The Chicago White Sox have reportedly expressed interest in trading for San Diego Padres 3B Chase Headley, although the Padres might wait until midseason to shop him. Headley will become a free agent after the 2014 season.

Catcher

C | J.P. Arencibia | Texas Rangers | Transaction, Fantasy
The Texas Rangers agreed to a one-year, $1.8 million deal with free-agent C J.P. Arencibia (Blue Jays) Friday, Dec. 6. Incentives could push the total of the deal to $2.1 million.

Arencibia will serve as the backup to Geovany Soto. Arencibia's power should play nicely in Texas, but you'll have to struggle with his poor batting average and limited playing time, too.

Outfielder

OF | Matt Kemp | Los Angeles Dodgers | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
The Los Angeles Dodgers may trade one of its outfielders to find extra help shoring up other key areas. Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti confirms he has had interest in all four of his outfielders (Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier, Yasiel Puig and Carl Crawford). "We've got four really good outfielders and we've got to be careful. We can't sell off to sell off and in 2015 say, 'Let's go get an outfielder on the free-agent market," Colletti said. "We've checked the list. It's not overloaded with choices. There's a lack of impact outfielders available. We better be sure if we make a move that we help our club for a while."

OF | Curtis Granderson | New York Mets | Free Agents, Fantasy
In the wake of the New York Mets signing OF Curtis Granderson, the team may redouble its efforts to deal either 1B Ike Davis or OF Lucas Duda. The team may find a shortstop on the trade market since not much is left on the free-agent side.

OF | Raul Ibanez | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
The Atlanta Braves, Colorado Rockies, Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers are among the teams that have recently expressed interest in free-agent OF/DH Raul Ibanez (Mariners). The New York Yankees had previously shown interest in him.

OF | Carlos Beltran | New York Yankees | Fantasy
Updating a previous report, New York Yankees OF Carlos Beltran's three-year, $45 million deal features a no-trade clause. He will make exactly $15 million each season.

OF | Brett Gardner | New York Yankees | Fantasy
The New York Yankees are not looking to trade OF Brett Gardner but are willing to listen to offers if the offers lead to acquiring a starting pitcher.

OF | Shin-Soo Choo | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
Cincinnati Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said it will be difficult to re-sign free-agent OF Shin-Soo Choo at the salaries that are being mentioned.

OF | Billy Hamilton | Cincinnati Reds | Free Agents, Fantasy
Cincinnati Reds general manager Walt Jocketty indicated OF Billy Hamilton will likely take over center field duties in place of free-agent OF Shin-Soo Choo, who is likely headed elsewhere in 2014.

OF | Nelson Cruz | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
The Arizona Diamondbacks are not expected to pursue free-agent OF Shin-Soo Choo (Reds) because he is likely out of the team's price range. The team is not expected to pursue free-agent OF Nelson Cruz (Rangers) because of his ties to performance-enhancing drugs.

OF | Carlos Gonzalez | Colorado Rockies | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Colorado Rockies manager Walt Weiss is considering several options to fill the vacant leadoff spot, including OF Carlos Gonzalez. OFs Charlie Blackmon and Corey Dickerson are also considered top candidates for the top spot in the order. 2B DJ LeMahieu, 2B Josh Rutledge, OF Brandon Barnes and OF Charlie Culberson are also others who could earn leadoff opportunities. Weiss said Friday, Dec. 6, that he is not ruling out other options.

Gonzalez moving to the leadoff spot would mean a dip in his RBI numbers, but also an increase in his runs scored, and perhaps stolen base totals. Either way, he will be a stud fantasy option again in 2014.

OF | Moises Sierra | Toronto Blue Jays | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Toronto Blue Jays OF Moises Sierra appears to be the early favorite to platoon with 1B Adam Lind next season. Lind is expected to see a bulk of the starts against right-handed pitching, and there is a need for someone to fill the role against left-handed pitching vacated by OF Mark DeRosa (Retired). Sierra recently started taking grounders at first base. Since he is out of options, a platoon with Lind appears to be the only way he could stick with the organization. "Sierra could be that guy," general manager Alex Anthopoulos said Friday, Dec. 6.

OF | Jackie Bradley | Boston Red Sox | Fantasy
Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington insists the team isn't down on OF Jackie Bradley after he hit only .189 with a .280 on-base percentage over 37 games in his rookie season. He struck out 31 times in 95 at-bats. Cherington said the team "would feel very good" about Bradley taking over for OF Jacoby Ellsbury in center field next season. However, the Red Sox know Bradley is still young, so they are looking to add a veteran outfielder that could complement him against lefties. "I definitely don't feel like what I showed this year is what I'm capable of," Bradley said. "I showed some glimpses, but I know that wasn't me. You can look at my track record. I've hit at every level. I was able to go through that, take my lumps and bumps, as John Farrell said. I definitely feel like I got better in the bigger picture."

OF | Juan Lagares | New York Mets | Injury, Fantasy
New York Mets OF Juan Lagares (knee) was told that his injury isn't serious, and he's been advised to rest it for several weeks.

OF | Nate McLouth | Washington Nationals | Fantasy
Washington Nationals OF Nate McLouth will earn $10.75 million as part of his two-year deal with the team. The contract includes an option for a third season.

OF | Chris B. Young | New York Mets | Fantasy
New York Mets OF Curtis Granderson will earn $60 million as part of his four-year deal, pending the outcome of his physical. Granderson is likely to play left field for the Mets, with OFs Juan Lagares in center field and Chris B. Young in right. That could free up OF Eric Young Jr. to play second base if the team trades 2B Daniel Murphy.

SP | Trevor Bauer | Cleveland Indians | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy,

SP | J.A. Happ | Toronto Blue Jays | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy,
Toronto Blue Jays SP J.A. Happ is considered a potential veteran presence at the back end of the rotation if the team does not find any upgrades on the open market. San Diego Padres SPs Cory Luebke (elbow) and Joe Wieland (elbow) both threw off a mound against live hitters this fall in their rehabs.

SP | David Price | Tampa Bay Rays | Fantasy

SP | Hiroki Kuroda | New York Yankees | Transaction, Fantasy
The New York Yankees re-signed SP Hiroki Kuroda to a one-year, $16 million deal with $500,000 in potential incentives. He'll earn $250,000 for 190 and 210 innings pitched, each, and an interpreter.

Relief Pitcher

RP | Joel Hanrahan | free agent | Injury, Free Agents, Fantasy
Free-agent RP Joel Hanrahan (Red Sox) (elbow) is expected to throw by the end of spring training and be ready by late April or early May. He is generating lots of interest.

RP | Aroldis Chapman | Cincinnati Reds | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Cincinnati Reds CL Aroldis Chapman said he would prefer to remain the team's closer and is not interested in returning to the starting rotation. "I'm tired of every year the same thing about me either starting or closing," Chapman said in Spanish. "What I have in mind is closing games and that's it."

RP | Chad Qualls | Houston Astros | Transaction, Free Agents,
The Houston Astros have signed free-agent RP Chad Qualls (Marlins) to a two-year deal worth $6 million. The deal includes an option year worth $3.5 million.

RP | Edward Mujica | Boston Red Sox | Fantasy
Updating a previous report, Boston Red Sox RP Edward Mujica could earn as much as $1 million in incentives based on the number of games he finishes over the next two seasons. He will earn $100,000 for reaching 20 games finished and for every five games thereafter up to 55 games.

RP | Jose Veras | free agent | Transaction, Free Agents,
The Colorado Rockies are interested in free-agent RP Jose Veras (Tigers), as they continue to search for a veteran bullpen arm.

RP | Cody Allen | Cleveland Indians | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy,
If the Cleveland Indians do not bring in a candidate to close from outside of the organization, RPs Cody Allen, Matt Capps, Vinnie Pestano and Bryan Shaw are the likely leading candidates to replace RP Chris Perez in the closer's role.

RP | Pedro Strop | Chicago Cubs | Injury, Free Agents, Fantasy,
The Chicago Cubs have mutual interest in free-agent RP John Axford (Cardinals) as they look to shore up their closer situation this offseason. Executive Theo Epstein said he won't really know who the team's closer is until the offseason is over. Axford has reportedly heard from 14 teams this winter. The Cubs believe RP Pedro Strop has the stuff to close, and RPs Kyuji Fujikawa (elbow) and Arodys Vizcaino (elbow) are recovering from Tommy John surgery.

RP | Jonathan Papelbon | Philadelphia Phillies | Fantasy,
The Philadelphia Phillies have RP Jonathan Papelbon on the trade block. He's due $13 million next season, $13 million in 2015 and has a $13 million vesting option for the 2016 season.
