First Baseman

1B | Ike Davis | New York Mets | Fantasy
New York Mets 1B Ike Davis is expected to enter spring training competing for the starting first base job with OF Lucas Duda after the team didn't find any takers on the trade market this winter. The loser of the competition will sit on the bench or move to the minors. "We're not going to move Ike just to move Ike -- or any other player for that matter," general manager Sandy Alderson said. "This is a trade market, not a yard sale, and right now we're perfectly happy to go into spring training with Davis and Duda both on the team. Frankly, we're not that actively engaged in trade discussions involving Ike at this point. I think that underscores our willingness to go into camp with both."

Shortstop

SS | Stephen Drew | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
New York Mets SS Ruben Tejada is likely to enter the season as the team's starting shortstop. The Mets haven't brought in a shortstop from outside the organization and are "extremely unlikely" to sign free-agent SS Stephen Drew (Red Sox). "The same three alternatives exist: sign a free agent, make a trade, or go with what we have subject to probably bringing in a backup to Tejada," general manager Sandy Alderson said. "I'd say right now, it's probably more likely that we will go with Option C, which is Ruben at shortstop with the addition of a backup."

Third Baseman

3B | Alex Rodriguez | New York Yankees | Fantasy
New York Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez is discussing the possibility of accepting a reduced ban without attempting to do an injunction that would delay his punishment, according to a source close to Rodriguez. A suspension longer than 100 games will likely lead Rodriguez and his representation to go after a temporary restraining order against arbitrator Fredric Horowitz's ruling in court. If Rodriguez continues to battle the suspension, it will cost him "at least $10 million, with no guarantee of winning." Horowitz could announce his decision as soon as Friday, Jan. 10.

Catcher

C | Kurt Suzuki | Minnesota Twins | Fantasy
Updating previous items, the $2.75 million contract signed by Minnesota Twins C Kurt Suzuki contains incentives. Suzuki's bonus plan kicks in with a $100,000 bonus for starting 85 games behind the plate. Starts at designated hitter or another position don't count. Suzuki can earn $100,000 more with his 95th start, followed by bonuses of $150,000 apiece for making 105 and 115 starts. Should Suzuki be selected to his first All-Star Game this July at Target Field, he would be paid an additional $25,000 incentive bonus.

Outfielder

OF | Bryce Harper | Washington Nationals | Injury, Fantasy
Updating previous reports, Washington Nationals OF Bryce Harper (knee) said he is well after he had surgery to repair a bursa sac in his knee. He said the injury plagued him for much of the season after he ran into the right-field wall in June.

Starting Pitcher

SP | A.J. Burnett | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy,
Pittsburgh Pirates pitching coach Ray Searage believes free-agent SP A.J. Burnett will choose to call it quits before the 2014 season. In an appearance on The Fan Morning Show in Pittsburgh, Searage said he is preparing for Burnett to retire. "I'm on the percentage point where he's not going to come back. I've got to prepare my guys with no A.J. I've got to prepare the pitching with no A.J. So that's the route I'm going," Searage said.

SP | Masahiro Tanaka | Japanese League | Free Agents, Fantasy,
The Houston Astros remain unlikely to sign Japanese SP Masahiro Tanaka, MLB.com's Evan Drellich believes.

SP | Wei-Yin Chen | Baltimore Orioles | Injury, Fantasy,
Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter said SP Wei-Yin Chen (knee) has been "a little slow" in his recovery from knee surgery, but he's not too concerned.

SP | Justin Verlander | Detroit Tigers | Injury, Fantasy,
Detroit Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski confirmed that SP Justin Verlander's (abdominal) injuries are "similar" to what 3B Miguel Cabrera dealt with this past season. Both players had the same surgeon.

SP | Trevor Bauer | Cleveland Indians | Fantasy
Cleveland Indians SP Trevor Bauer has made mechanical adjustments this offseason that has impressed the coaching staff. "He's kind of getting back to his old delivery," pitching coach Mickey Callaway said. "It looks really good. It looked like his command is getting better and there's some more deception. I would say it's a more refined delivery. It's the same mechanics but a little more refined, and it looks a little more repeatable. It's a little less violent."

Relief Pitcher

RP | John Axford | Cleveland Indians | Fantasy,
The Cleveland Indians are confident that RP John Axford can be a successful closer for them after he made some mechanical adjustments after being traded to the St. Louis Cardinals last year. "He has maintained an elite fastball with a very good secondary pitch," said general manager Chris Antonetti. "As we looked at a lot of information -- subjective information from our scouts, video analysis, analytics -- they all pointed to a bounce back." Axford noted that his velocity was down considerably at the beginning of last season after he pitched in the World Baseball Classic.

RP | Eduardo Sanchez | Detroit Tigers | Fantasy
The Detroit Tigers announced that 16 non-roster players have been invited to Major League Spring Training, including OF Trevor Crowe, OF Ezequiel Carrera and P Eduardo Sanchez.

RP | Bobby Parnell | New York Mets | Injury, Fantasy,
New York Mets RP Bobby Parnell (neck) has been fully cleared for baseball activities after undergoing surgery for a herniated disc in his neck Sept. 10. He's expected to serve as the closer for the team again this year after going 22-for-26 in save chances in 2013. "He looked terrific -- toned, strong, limber," said one person who recently saw Parnell. Parnell lost around 30 pounds after the surgery.
