Fantasy Football Draft Guide - Player Profiles and AnalysisThomas Jones, RB, New York Jets
By KFFL Staff Thomas Jones | New York Jets | 5-foot-10, 215 pounds | 10th year
Pros: The vet delivered a career-best season (1,312 rushing yards, 36 receptions, 15 total trips to the end zone) when most expected little of him. Jones has averaged 4.0 yards per carry or more in five of his last six seasons. The Jets have put together one of the best run-blocking lines in football, with a mix of talent, experience or both across the front. One of Jones' path pavers, Damien Woody, observed that Jones appears to have gained substantial muscle this offseason. That's likely in an effort to prove he's worthy of a new contract. Cons: A career year from a 30-year-old? Jones turns 31 before the season begins. He's no stranger to nagging injuries; his calf problem in 2007 contributed to his 3.6 yards-per-carry mark. Won't the added weight only hurt him? At his age, he's not getting any faster. He wore down near the end of the year. If he remains unhappy with his current deal. Leon Washington seems ready for an expanded role, and the Jets drafted Jones' potential successor in Shonn Greene. Brett Favre, who commanded respect from defenses, is no longer quarterback; rookie Mark Sanchez or unimpressive fourth-year man Kellen Clemens will replace him. Fantasy tip: Don't draft Jones and expect a repeat of 2008. It's mostly downside for the over-30 class entrant. That doesn't mean he won't be worthy of fantasy No. 2 status, but he's highly unlikely to deliver as a surprise No. 1 performer again. It'd be safest to wait on him until the fourth round, but someone in your fantasy draft probably won't let that happen. If you land him, target Greene as a handcuff late.
