Pros: He took advantage of Tom Brady's (knee) misfortune and emerged as a capable NFL starter in 2008. Cassel amassed 3,693 yards with 21 touchdown passes; he played at an near-elite level and earned more trust to sling the ball downfield in the New England Patriots' offense as the season wore on (14 touchdowns, five picks thrown after October). In that time, he produced four multi-touchdown games. The Chiefs have wideout Dwayne Bowe and a decent running game (Larry Johnson, Jamaal Charles) from which Cassel can build outward. New head coach Todd Haley used his offensive system to mold the Arizona Cardinals into the latest offensive juggernaut.

Cons: Cassel (knee) suffered a sprained knee and may not be ready for Week 1. Is Cassel a system product? He hadn't taken meaningful regular-season snaps before Brady's departure, and his hesitating release (NFL-worst 47 sacks last year) haunted him in his first few games on the field. The same jitters may return in his first few games within the new offense. The exit of all-century tight end Tony Gonzalez removes a potential safety blanket and high-level blocker. How much growth will the offensive line show this year? Will any other receiver besides Bowe emerge to help carry the load? Haley deferred when asked if Cassel was his best quarterback in training camp.

Fantasy tip: There's reason to think Cassel find similar success; he's in another productive system and has an emerging, near-elite wideout. It's OK to be skeptical, though, that he can't repeat his 2008 success with a weaker offensive team. He's still a reasonable fantasy backup, but don't make him your starter.
