Fantasy Football Draft Guide - Player Profiles and AnalysisBen Roethlisberger, QB, Pittsburgh Steelers
By KFFL Staff Ben Roethlisberger | Pittsburgh Steelers | 6-foot-5, 241 pounds | 6th year
Pros: Big Ben knows how to direct an effective offensive attack. You trust him to make the right choice with the ball; he has thrown more than 15 picks in just one season (23 in '06). He has a seasoned hands receiver (Hines Ward), an emerging deep threat (wideout Santonio Holmes) and a reliable red zone target (tight end Heath Miller). A full season from second-year back Rashard Mendenhall (shoulder) adds more upside to the clock-control game. Though not fleet-footed, the scrambling-capable Roethlisberger can chip in a few six-pointers on the ground, too. Cons: Though he has missed just two games since 2004, Roethlisberger has more bruises than a year-old banana. His offensive line let him down often last year, and opposing defenders planted Roethlisberger for at least 46 sacks in each of the last three years, including that number last year to post the second-highest total in the league. He has only thrown more than 18 scores in a season only once (his anomalous 32-score 2007 campaign). Ben sustained a minor knee injury at Steelers practice - doesn't seem to be serious, but given his tendency to come down with some malady, it's not encouraging. Fantasy tip: He's an ideal backup because he doesn't hurt you too much; you'll feel comfortable plugging him in on a bye week, but he doesn't put up enough points to consistently add much to your starting lineup. He should be one of the top No. 2 signal callers taken, preferably after the first nine rounds or so.
