Pros: Smith has averaged 82.67 receptions over the past three years, and in 2005 he snagged 103 passes. His 2008 campaign was one of the best of his career, logging 1,421 yards (second best of his career), 18.2 yards per catch (career best) and six scores. Smith has been a big-play threat his entire career, having scored touchdowns of 65, 67, 72, 74 and 80 yards in the past six years. Smith is quarterback Jake Delhomme's favorite target, and the veteran signal caller is a year removed from Tommy John surgery, so his arm should be 100 percent going forward. Eight of Smith's 14 games last year were 100-yard performances.

Cons: Smith (shoulder) may miss the preseason with a shoulder injury, but he is expected back by Week 1. The Panthers are a run-first team with two first-round mouths to feed, so the days of Smith catching 100 passes are probably long gone. Smith has always struggled with injuries, and last year he let his temper get the best of him after getting in a fight with a teammate that resulted in Smith being suspended for the first two games of the year. Regardless of whose fault it has been, Smith's productivity has been all over the place in his career; he and consistency are not close pals.

Fantasy tip: The Panthers' No. 1 receiver should be viewed as a low-end No. 1 wideout for fantasy owners. As mentioned, he is streaky, so be prepared for several weeks of that make you sick to your stomach (See one catch for nine yards versus the Oakland Raiders last year). Smith's draft placement of the late second round may be a bit early, but he often slides into the third round, which is were we feel most comfortable drafting him.
