Pros: Williams broke out in a huge way in 2008, more than doubling his 2007 rushing yardage output and improving his '07 rushing touchdown total by 4 1/2 times. Altogether, Williams' 2008 stat line read like something from a page of LaDainian Tomlinson's decorated career: 273 carries for 1,515 yards (5.5 per carry) and 18 touchdowns. He added 22 receptions for 121 yards and two scores. Yikes! Where did that come from? No so fast, presumptive one. Williams was a statistical terror toting the rock at the University of Memphis, eclipsing 1,900 rushing yards back-to-back years and crossing the stripe 40 times from 2004 to 2005. The Panthers are a run-first offense, and Williams posted those freakish stats last year sharing the backfield with then-rookie Jonathan Stewart. Williams, 26, has experienced increases in his attempts, yardage, yards-per-carry average and rushing touchdowns each season since entering the league.

Cons: Williams may end up ceding more carries to Stewart this season, and Carolina's aging offense could take a step back in general. The former Tiger scored 14 of his 18 rushing touchdowns in only five games, inconsistency that can make him maddening to play. Williams rushed for less than 70 yards in five games and managed 31 or less in three games. Was Williams a one-year wonder last season? We don't think so, but it has to be in the back of your mind on draft day.

Fantasy tip: There is no question Williams should be a first-round pick. We have witnessed him slide into the top of the second round in an experts draft, which was highway robbery (and that is what happens went two receivers go in the top five). His average draft placement suggests he is about the seventh overall pick, but we don't recommend drafting him any higher than that. Expect low- to mid-No. 1 production from Williams in 2009.
