Fantasy Football Draft Guide - Player Profiles and AnalysisMaurice Jones-Drew, RB, Jacksonville Jaguars
By KFFL Staff Maurice Jones-Drew | Jacksonville Jaguars | 5-foot-7, 208 pounds | 4th year
Pros: For the first time in his NFL career, Jones-Drew doesn't have to share the backfield after the Jaguars released veteran tailback Fred Taylor this offseason. MJD carried the ball a career-high 197 times last year and held up to the modest pounding. He has averaged 4.8 yards per carry during his career, and "Mojo" has been a pint-sized touchdown machine, averaging 12.67 total touchdowns per year since entering the league. The Jaguars have improved their offensive line and have attempted to upgrade their passing game. Jones-Drew is an excellent receiver out of the backfield; he has snared an average of nearly 50 catches per year. In this ground-control offense, MJD is undoubtedly the focal point. Cons: We're not sure how Jones-Drew will hold up to an every-down beating, and it's unclear if the Jags can sustain enough of a passing attack to regularly catch defenses off-guard. As his per-game workload has increased, Jones-Drew's average yards per carry has decreased from 5.7 (2006) to 4.6 (2007) to 4.2 in 2008. Even though the Jags have upgraded their passing game - on paper, at least - we doubt quarterback David Garrard instills fear in defenders. Jones-Drew can be streaky, having scored eight of his 14 total touchdowns in four games last year. Fantasy tip: MJD is being drafted as the first player with modest regularity in point-per-reception leagues, and he is usually selected no later than the third player. Jones-Drew should gobble up yardage on both the ground and through the air on his way to being a top-five fantasy running back in 2009.
