Mark Sheldon, of MLB.com, reports the Cincinnati Reds placed starting pitcher Edinson Volquez (elbow) on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, June 2, with right elbow tendonitis. He will not participate in baseball activities for the next seven to 10 days.

The Reds are looking to recall reliever Jared Burton to fill Volquez's roster spot but need approval from Major League Baseball, considering they sent Burton down earlier in the day June 2.

Volquez mustered only one inning in his return from the DL Monday, June 1. He left the contest after feeling numbness in his pinkie and ring fingers on his right hand. It's time to put Volquez back in a DL slot and wait for his next opportunity to improve on a down season.

Cincinnati plans to decide who will take Volquez's rotation turn Saturday, June 6, against the Chicago Cubs, with options including pitching right-hander Bronson Arroyo on three days' rest.

Mound prospect Matt Maloney (3.27 ERA, 9.0 K/9 in his minor league career) is 4-3 with a 2.00 ERA in 10 starts at Triple-A Louisville this year. He started Monday and is in a good spot for a call-up. It's best to avoid him in mixed leagues, though NL players should keep an eye out based on the long-term potential here.
