The Los Angeles Times' Bill Shaikin and Dylan Hernandez report Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Manny Ramirez was suspended 50 games, effective immediately, for a positive drug test. Ramirez is expected to attribute the test results to medication received from a doctor for a personal medical issue, according to a source familiar with matter but not authorized to speak publicly.
This is a huge blow to fantasy owners not only because they will lose Ramirez's production for 50 games, but he will use up a roster spot because you can't put him on the disabled list.
With the suspension taking effect Thursday, May 7, he'll be eligible to return to the team July 3. This is great news for those fantasy owners quick to the trigger to grab outfielder Juan Pierre. Pierre has been used sparingly this season and is the team's best option in left field. He could easily rack up 15 to 20 steals in the next 50 games. Pick him up in all formats if you have the space.
It's a tough spot to be in, but hold on to Ramirez in all formats. There is still a lot of season left for him to amass numbers.
