The Baltimore Sun's Jeff Zrebiec reports Baltimore Orioles reliever George Sherrill has been removed from the closer role. Manager Dave Trembley said he will decide who pitches in save situations on a daily basis. Sherrill likely will see some save chances.

Relief pitcher Chris Ray is one pitcher in line to receive some save chances; he held the role in 2006 and for part of 2007. However, he has been awful this season with a 7.56 ERA and 2.16 WHIP. Reliever Danys Baez could be the dark horse as he has pitched extremely well. He has struck out 12 in 13 2/3 innings and has a 2.63 ERA on the season. Baez has also saved 114 games since 2002. Reliever Jim Johnson should also figure into the equation; he has allowed just one earned run in his last eight innings.

It's a messy situation right now in Baltimore. Baez has looked the best of the three, but we feel Ray has the best value for the long term. Both should be acquired as deep mixed options. Johnson should be acquired solely in AL-only leagues as a desperate option. All three could see save chances, though, so relying on any for consistent saves in the short term could be frustrating.
