Manager Cecil Cooper said he told Paulino of the move Friday. Paulino, 0-2 with a 2.55 ERA in three starts, will pitch in a relief role when right-hander Brian Moehler returns from the disabled list to start on Tuesday at Washington.

Cooper said Moehler and Russ Ortiz are veterans who "deserve at least an opportunity to continue pitching in the rotation." He said Paulino is "a guy sitting out there whom we like an awful lot" and will be ready if either veteran falters.

Moehler allowed eight runs in five innings in his second rehab start for Double-A Corpus Christi on Wednesday. He was placed on the disabled list with a sprained right knee on April 14.
