Atlanta Braves ink SP Derek Lowe

ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick reports the Atlanta Braves agreed with free-agent starting pitcher Derek Lowe (Los Angeles Dodgers) on a four-year, $60 million contract. The deal is pending a physical.

In 2008 Lowe had his best year as a starter since 2002; he went 14-11 with a 3.24 ERA. Lowe comes to another fairly neutral park that favors pitchers only to a slight degree in a heated National League East division. The Dodgers struggled to score runs for Lowe in the first half last season, as he went 7-8 with a 3.85 ERA. However, he went 7-3 with a 2.38 ERA in the second half.

The Braves don't possess a strong offense. They were 16th in the majors in runs scored, but they no longer have first baseman Mark Teixeira (New York Yankees) as they did for the first half of last season. Lowe could struggle to reach the 15-win plateau in 2009, but he could post an ERA similar to last season's. Lowe could be a No. 3 fantasy starting pitcher, although he might be available as a No. 4 on draft day.
