In this article KFFL breaks down fantasy football busts of the week. Some high-level players will be included, because you need to know when is time to sit a player even though it may not seem appropriate. Primarily, however, we will address the midrange to low-end fantasy options that you rack your brain over each week. Read on to learn which of these players that you wouldn't want in your lineup.
Fantasy football busts: Defensive linemen
Barry Cofield, New York Giants at Cleveland Browns
Fantasy value: Midrange No. 2
- Cofield leads the team's defensive linemen with 4.3 total tackles (3.3 solo) per game over the last four weeks. He also has 0.3 sacks per game in that time.
- Opposing linemen are tied for the league worst with just 13 total tackles per game against the Browns over the last four weeks; 10.7 of those tackles have been solo. The position is also averaging just 1.0 sack per game in that time.
- The Browns offense could find it tough to stay on the field against the Giants' suffocating defense. If Cofield isn't on the field, he can't give you any fantasy points.
Ray McDonald, San Francisco 49ers vs. Philadelphia Eagles
Fantasy value: Weak No. 2 or strong No. 3
- With an average of 3.8 total tackles (three solo) per game over the last four weeks, McDonald ranks second among 49ers defensive linemen in that respect. He also is averaging 0.2 sacks per game in that time.
- The Eagles are one of three teams tied for the league low in total tackles allowed (13) per game to opposing defensive linemen during the last four weeks; of those tackles, 11 are solo. They're also allowing 0.8 sacks per game in that time.
Justin Bannan, Baltimore Ravens at Indianapolis Colts
Fantasy value: Midrange No. 3
- Bannan is averaging four tackles (two solo) per game over the last four weeks, which ranks first among Ravens defensive linemen. The seventh-year veteran recorded his first career interception last Sunday.
- The Colts are allowing only 14 total tackles (11 solo) and 1.0 sack per game to the position over the last four weeks. The total tackles are tied for the fifth-fewest allowed per game over that stretch.
Fantasy football busts: Linebackers
Chad Greenway, Minnesota Vikings vs. Detroit Lions
Fantasy value: Weak No. 1 or strong No. 2
- Greenway ranks first among Vikings linebackers with 7.8 total tackles (5.5 solo) and 0.2 sacks per game over the last four weeks.
- Opposing linebackers are averaging 17.3 total tackles (13.7 solo) and 2.0 sacks per game against the Lions over the last four weeks. The sacks are the most allowed per game in that time, but that isn't Greenway's game - he has one career sack - the tackles are the fourth fewest.
Jerod Mayo, New England Patriots at San Diego Chargers
Fantasy value: Weak No. 2 or strong No. 3
- Mayo is averaging seven total tackles (5.7 solo) per game over the last four weeks, which leads Patriots linebackers in that time.
- With an average of 18 total tackles allowed (15 solo) per game over the last four weeks to the position, the Chargers are tied for fifth fewest in the league. They've also given up 0.1 sacks per game to this position.
Paris Lenon, Detroit Lions at Minnesota Vikings
Fantasy value: Midrange No. 3
- Lenon is averaging 7.7 total tackles (3.7 solo) per game over the last four weeks; his total tackles are good for second among Lions linebackers.
- The Vikings are giving up 23.8 total tackles (18.5 solo) per game to the position over the last four weeks. They have allowed little else with only 0.8 fumble recoveries allowed per game in that time.
Fantasy football busts: Defensive backs
Cedric Griffin, Minnesota Vikings vs. Detroit Lions
Fantasy value: Midrange No. 2
- Griffin is first among Vikings defensive backs with six total tackles (5.5 solo) per game over the last four weeks.
- The Lions are allowing only 20 total tackles (16.7 solo) per game to this position over the last four weeks (tied for fourth fewest in the league). However, they are giving up 1.7 interceptions to defensive backs per game in that that time.
- If quarterback Jon Kitna (back) doesn't play, the Lions could limit their passing attempts with an untested signal caller - Dan Orlovsky (knee, ankle) or Drew Stanton - taking the snaps.
Mike McKenzie, New Orleans Saints vs. Oakland Raiders
Fantasy value: Weak No. 2 or strong No. 3
- McKenzie (knee) is averaging five total tackles (all solo) per game over the last four weeks (three games). He also has one interception in that stretch.
- Opposing defensive backs are averaging 22.3 total tackles (18 solo) against the Raiders, which is the ninth fewest in the league in that stretch. They have given up nothing else to this position except for 0.7 fumble recoveries per game.
- McKenzie failed to make it on the practice field Wednesday, Oct. 8, but it was likely a day of rest for the veteran cornerback. He is expected to play in Week 6.
Brent Grimes, Atlanta Falcons vs. Chicago Bears
Fantasy value: Midrange No. 3
- Grimes is averaging 4.8 total tackles (4.2 solo) and 0.2 interceptions per game over the last four weeks.
- Chicago has allowed the seventh fewest total tackles (20.8; 18.5 solo) per game to opposing defensive backs over the last four weeks. They're also giving up 0.2 interceptions and 0.2 sacks per game to the position in that time.
