The Associated Press reports Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips (finger) will miss the rest of the season due to a broken right index finger suffered when he was hit during a failed bunt attempt Tuesday, Sept. 9. Phillips showed no signs of the injury, getting right back in the batter's box. Then he hit a game-winning single in the 11th inning. Reds spokesman Rob Butcher said Phillips would be examined Wednesday in Cincinnati.

Phillips finishes his season having hit .261 with 21 homers, 78 RBIs and 23 stolen bases. Losing Phillips is a blow to any fantasy team in the waning weeks of the 2008 campaign because he's one of the best fantasy second basemen. He provides scarce power from the position that likely can't be replaced since most leagues don't allow trades this late in the season. He's also a big contributor in the stolen base department (23 this year), making him a pretty rare asset at the position.

The Reds will likely use this time to see what they have in infielders Danny Richar and Paul Janish. Both players were brought up Tuesday from Triple-A Louisville. The 25-year-old Richar hit just .254 with two homers and 16 RBIs at Louisville. The 25-year-old Janish hit .252 with seven homers and 42 RBIs at Louisville. Neither player offers any fantasy value beyond NL-only leagues.

For those of you in non-keeper leagues, it's time to release Phillips and look elsewhere for a replacement.
