He was happy to have a lighter day Friday, as he is still recovering from right shoulder surgery and the team has been throwing a great deal thus far in camp. "This is the most throwing we'll do at any time," Smith said. "To blow it out in the first few weeks would be dumb. When your pitch count is that high, it's time for a day off." Smith has been busy trying to pick up offensive coordinator Mike Martz's system and feels the heavy workload is a test by Martz to see how his quarterbacks respond to the avalanche of new information.

The Associated Press reports if Cleveland Browns QB Derek Anderson gets off to a slow start there will be an instant clamor for second-year QB Brady Quinn. The Browns open against the Dallas Cowboys and then play the Pittsburgh Steelers, so if they start the season 0-2 - even if it isn't Anderson's fault - the noise for the backup quarterback is likely to begin.

The Associated Press reports Atlanta Falcons QB Chris Redman isn't ready to hand over the starting job to rookie QB Matt Ryan. Ryan is clearly the team's quarterback of the future after they drafted him in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft, but Redman wants to be the team's No. 1 quarterback when the season begins. Redman, the incumbent starter, said he feels he has earned respect around the team and he will be OK as long as he does his part. Redman completed 59.7 percent of his passes last year for 1,079 yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions. His 90.7 quarterback rating in 2007 was the best of any of the quarterbacks on the team.

McFadden is expected to share the workload at running back with RB Justin Fargas, at least in the early portion of the season. McFadden said he wants to make an impact in Oakland like RB Adrian Peterson did with the Minnesota Vikings last year. "That's something I want to do here in Oakland," McFadden said.

Payton, however, hesitated, which may indicate he could foresee some situations where Thomas is seeing too many carries to also cover kicks. Payton said Thomas is competing for "a lot of touches and he's doing well." He noted the team has confidence in Thomas and said they are going to give him a "serious look."

If Hester does not play a down at wide receiver, he will still receive $22 million in new money. The contract includes a $5 million signing bonus with $10 million in roster bonuses. A $200,000 workout bonus worth $250,000 for the final four years for a $1.2 million total in workout bonuses. He is scheduled to make $750,000 in 2010, $1.5 million in 2011, $1.6 million in 2012 and $1.8 million in 2013. Hester will receive a base pay of $445,000 this season and $530,000 in 2009.

Jackson came alive late last season in the playoffs, as he had a run of three-straight 90-yard games, including his first career 100-yard performance. During the team's three playoff games, Jackson caught 18 passes, which topped his previous three-game high of 11 receptions.

The Associated Press reports Jacksonville Jaguars WR Matt Jones is trying to make it difficult for the Jaguars to release him. Jones is facing a felony drug charge in Arkansas and has been speculated to be on the bubble with the team. He had an impressive 19-yard touchdown reception during the team's preseason scrimmage Friday, Aug. 1. Head coach Jack Del Rio was previously raving about Jones, too, and noted he has had the best camp he has had since he joined the team. Jones credited staying healthy in camp, which is something he has previously had problems with, as the main reason he has been able to stand out.
