He is expected to shoulder a heavy load and be the centerpiece of offensive coordinator Chan Gailey's power running system. Johnson said he likes the new system and is getting to know it. "It's a good offense for me," Johnson said. He noted the system is easier to learn than that of previous coordinators and he is picking up the nuances of it quickly.

Matt Gelb, of the Philadelphia Inquirer, reports Philadelphia Eagles RB Brian Westbrook said he wants to be compensated like one of the best running backs in the league. He is counting on a deal being completed but would not say what may happen if a new deal isn't in place. Thus far, negotiations between his agent, Todd France, and the Eagles have not progressed. He said he is optimistic and if he wasn't feeling that way he wouldn't have reported to training camp. He is due $3 million base salary and a $1.5 million roster bonus this year. Westbrook added he should be in a different group of players because he is able to get it done as a running back and a receiver. "You have to look at impact players," he noted. .... "It's about production."

Tom FitzGerald, of The San Francisco Chronicle, reports San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Martz said he plans to use RB Frank Gore as a receiving option in every way possible. He'll be used "as a deep threat, short threat, crossing threat. ... We have to be careful not to overload him and take away what he does best, which is run the football," Martz said.
