Gordon Wittenmyer, of the Chicago Sun Times, reports the Chicago Cubs have placed closer Kerry Wood (finger) on the 15-day disabled list with a blister on his right index finger. The move is retroactive to July 14, so he will be eligible to come off Tuesday, July 29.
The team likely won't make a roster move until Friday, July 25, but they're expected to call up righty Jeff Samardzija from Triple-A Iowa to help in the bullpen.
Setup man Carlos Marmol will continue as the closer in Wood's absence. Marmol is having a down year by last year's standards. He's 2-3 with three saves, a 3.98 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP. He has struck out 72 batters in 54 1/3 innings, though. The high ERA can be explained by the seven homers Marmol has allowed thus far along with his combined 8.35 ERA in June and July. He has surrendered just 30 hits - so he's not being pummeled.
Samardzija had a 4.86 ERA at Double-A Tennessee but is 4-1 with a 3.13 ERA at Iowa. He struck out 40 in 37 1/3 innings and posted a .241 batting average against.
Pick up Marmol immediately, if possible. Fantasy owners may have dropped him due to his shaky numbers, but he was drafted in many mixed leagues, meaning he's likely unavailable.
Place Wood in a DL spot or on your bench in all formats. He's not expected to be out for long, but you should be prepared in case this lasts longer; a blister on his pitching hand could linger.
Samardzija could only be a temporary call-up, so he's only a factor in NL-only leagues this season.
