On Monday, April 16, the Toronto Blue Jays placed third baseman Troy Glaus (heel, hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list. He had sat out three games before being placed on the DL. Glaus has not had any recent problems with his heel or hamstring, so the 15-day stint may be all he needs to get healthy again. But not much has been disclosed about the injuries at this point.

Glaus has had issues with his legs as recently as 2006, his first season with the Blue Jays. He had an injury to his left foot and suffered from right knee tendonitis last season. But he still played in 153 games and didn't suffer a production drop, hitting 38 home runs last year. In 2005, Glaus had to take three cortisone shots in his left knee over the course of the season but still played in 149 games and hit 37 home runs for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Even all the way back to 1999, he had arthroscopic surgery on both knees. So Glaus has a history of knee issues, but they haven't seemed to effect his playing time and production. But since he is now 30 years old, this history of knee, and more recently, foot issues could become troublesome. Especially for a player who plays a defensive position, as opposed to being a DH, and is as prolific a power hitter as Glaus is when healthy.

So far in 2007, Glaus has hit .333 with two home runs and five RBI in eight games played. The most likely replacements for him in the Toronto lineup are infielders Jason Smith and John McDonald. Smith has gone 6-for-17 with three runs batted in so far in 2007, and should see some starts in Glaus' place. Neither man will likely come close to Glaus' power numbers, so they are not viable fantasy options at this point.

Some good possible replacements for Glaus include Baltimore Orioles third baseman Melvin Mora and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim third baseman Maicer Izturis. Izturis (.282, six runs batted in, two stolen bases so far in 2007) adds position eligibility at shortstop. Mora is hitting .258 but has three homers and 12 RBI on the young season.

Third base is a deep position this year, so scan your league's free agent list for a replacement for Glaus, if you own him of course. You may be able to uncover a player that someone else missed.
