Quarterback

QB | Daunte Culpepper | Minnesota Vikings | Fantasy
Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports the Minnesota Vikings have a deal in place to trade QB Daunte Culpepper, team officials confirmed Thursday, March 9. The trade is imminent, with the deal expected to go through Friday, March 10, just before the start of free agency. As noted earlier, the Oakland Raiders are the leading candidate to acquire Culpepper. Culpepper could not get along with new Vikings head coach Brad Childress, and the quarterback has upset various members of the organization with what they feel is his immature behavior.

QB | Gus Frerotte | Miami Dolphins | Fantasy
Alex Marvez, of the Sun-Sentinel, reports due to the six-year extension of the collective bargaining agreement, the Miami Dolphins do not have to release QB Gus Frerotte to get under the cap. However, agent Marvin Demoff said Dolphins head coach Nick Saban has informed Frerotte that the team is in the market for a new starting quarterback. When asked Wednesday, March 8, what the increase in cap space would mean to Frerotte, Demoff said, "In many ways, it doesn't change anything. It just to me makes it much more likely that the Dolphins can, if they want, sign an expensive quarterback other than Gus. It makes it a lot easier for them to do that."

QB | Kelly Holcomb | Buffalo Bills | Fantasy
Allen Wilson, of the Buffalo News, reports Buffalo Bills quarterbacks coach Turk Schonert said QBs J.P. Losman and Kelly Holcomb both will have a fair shot at the starting quarterback position. "This year going in, they are starting out even," Schonert said. "When is that decision going to be made? I don't know. Somebody is going to have to elevate their play." Schonert added that both players will have an equal chance with the first and second team offenses during the offseason minicamps so the team can see how they handle different situations.

QB | Tommy Maddox | Free Agent Players | Free Agency News

QB | Matt Leinart | NFL Draft Prospect | Draft Information
The Star Tribune reports agent Leigh Steinberg believes USC QB Matt Leinart will be the top quarterback taken in the NFL Draft, possibly with the No. 1 overall pick. "I feel as sure about Matt as I was about Ben Roethlisberger," said Steinberg, who is also the agent for the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback.

QB | Jon Kitna | Free Agent Players | Free Agency News
Geoff Hobson, of Bengals.com, reports free agent QB Jon Kitna (Bengals) says no trips are set up yet, no teams are definitely on the docket, and while the Cincinnati Bengals can't offer him the starting job or competition he seeks he won't close door on Cincinnati until he sees what's out there. "It's funny, but when we came out here five years ago in free agency, the Bengals kind of came in toward the end of it," Kitna said. "That was a little bit of a surprise. But when we came out and talked to people, it was the fit. We're going to do that again. Talk to people and see how it goes."

Running Back

RB | Shawn Bryson | Detroit Lions | Fantasy
Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports Detroit Lions RB Shawn Bryson's role with the team will likely not change as a third-down back. However, his playing time could be expanded. The Lions' coaching staff convinced Bryson that he will play a key role in 2006 under offensive coordinator Mike Martz.

RB | Edgerrin James | Free Agent Players | Free Agency News, Fantasy
D. Orlando Ledbetter, of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports the Indianapolis Colts might have enough salary cap space to re-sign RB Edgerrin James, who is expected to become an unrestricted free agent. The Colts, along with every other NFL team, gained $7.5 million in salary cap space as a result of the collective bargaining agreement extension Wednesday, March 8. The new salary cap for the 2006 season is $102 million.

RB | Brian Calhoun | NFL Draft Prospect | Draft Information
Jeff Potrykus, of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reports University of Wisconsin RB Brian Calhoun ran his 40-yard dash in a blazing 4.38 seconds at his Pro Day Wednesday, March 8. Calhoun had been clocked unofficially with disappointingly slow times of 4.59 and 4.62 at the NFL Combine last month in Indianapolis.

WR | Keary Colbert | Carolina Panthers | Injury News, Fantasy
Darin Gantt, of the Rock Hill Herald, reports Carolina Panthers WR Keary Colbert (ankle) had surgery recently to remove two bone chips from his right ankle, a problem he dealt with for most of the season. According to one of Colbert's representatives, the doctor who performed the surgery said he was surprised Colbert was able to perform as well as he did, considering the pain the injury must have caused. There was no ligament damage, as originally thought. After spending two weeks on crutches, Colbert's due for six weeks in a walking boot, which could make him questionable for the team's post-draft minicamp.

WR | Maurice Stovall | NFL Draft Prospect | Draft Information
Gil Brandt, of NFL.com, reports Notre Dame WR Maurice Stovall ran his 40s in 4.54 and 4.57 seconds at his Pro Day workout Wednesday, March 8. He also had a 32 1/2-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot-4 broad jump.

WR | Chad Jackson | NFL Draft Prospect | Draft Information
Gil Brandt, of NFL.com, reports Florida WR Chad Jackson had a 38 1/2-inch vertical jump and looked very good in position drills at his Pro Day workout Wednesday, March 8. As noted earlier, he did not re-do his other drills, but rather stood on the times he had established at the NFL Combine.

WR | David Givens | Free Agent Players | Free Agency News
Tom Casale, of Patriots.com, reports New England Patriots WR David Givens could be targeted by the Cleveland Browns once free agency begins. Browns head coach Romeo Crennel has said the team will target a veteran wide receiver in free agency, and Crennel was on the Patriots staff as a defensive cooridnator while Givens played wide receiver.

WR | Josh Reed | Free Agent Players | Free Agency News
Barry Jackson, of the Miami Herald, reports the Miami Dolphins are interested in free-agent WR Josh Reed (Bills).

WR | Ricky Proehl | Free Agent Players | Fantasy
Darin Gantt, of the Rock Hill Herald, reports Carolina Panthers WR Ricky Proehl is expected to return to the team in 2006, despite earlier reports he planned to retire. "I feel good physically, I feel like I can still play at this point in time. Obviously six or eight months from now is something different. I'll continue to stay in shape, and when the time comes I'll make a decision," Proehl said. If Proehl came back, there's a good chance it would be on a one-year, veteran minimum deal that allows the team some salary cap relief. Such deals pay older players $770,000 in base salary with a signing bonus of up to $25,000, but they count just $460,000 against the cap.

Place Kicker

PK | Ryan Longwell | Free Agent Players | Free Agency News
Rob Demovsky, of PackersNews.com, reports contract talks between the Green Bay Packers and free agent PK Ryan Longwell don't appear to have covered much ground in the final days leading up to free agency. There's a feeling in the organization that Longwell might not give the Packers a chance to match an offer he gets from another team.

PK | Matt Bryant | Free Agent Players | Free Agency News
Stephen F. Holder, of the St. Petersburg Times, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers PK Matt Bryant will become an unrestricted free agent and test the market, according to his agent. The team wants to re-sign Bryant, but the Bucs might be enticed by Green Bay free agent PK Ryan Longwell, whose former holder is Bucs P Josh Bidwell.

Defensive Line

DL | Aaron Kampman | Free Agent Players | Free Agency News
Pete Daugherty, of PackersNews.com, reports the Green Bay Packers have made re-signing DE Aaron Kampman their top priority, but there is a significant gap in negotiations between the two sides. Packers vice president of player finance Andrew Brandt continued talks late Wednesday, March 8, with Kampman's representatives. The team is believed to have upped their offer to re-sign Kampman before he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

DL | Sam Adams | Free Agent Players | Free Agency News
Alex Marvez, of the Sun-Sentinel, reports free agent DT Sam Adams (Bills) concluded a two-day visit with the Miami Dolphins on Wednesday, March 8. Pryce's agent, Peter Schaeffer, said Pryce has other visits scheduled. He declined to say how many, but he did not rule out the possibility of Pryce signing with the Browns and canceling the other visits. He's heard nothing but great things about the Browns and (head coach) Romeo (Crennel) and (GM) Phil (Savage). If he finds out everything he's heard is true, we'll see what happens," Schaeffer said.

Linebacker

LB | David Thornton | Free Agent Players | Free Agency News
Hank Lowenkron, of the Associated Press, reports Indianapolis Colts team president Bill Polian said Thursday, March 9, said he didn't anticipate making an offer to LB David Thornton before he gets the opportunity to test the free-agent market. Patriots.com reports the New England Patriots have officially released LB Willie McGinest.

LB | LaVar Arrington | Free Agent Players | Free Agency News
Tony Grossi, of the Plain Dealer, reports the Cleveland Browns have called agent Carl Poston to express an interest in free agent LB LaVar Arrington (Redskins), but the question now is whether Arrington has interest in them. "Yes, they have called to ask if he's going to be available, and the kind of interest he'd have in Cleveland," agent Carl Poston said Wednesday. March 8. "I told them he wants to wait for the collective bargaining agreement to be done." Poston said Arrington will not visit a team unless it proves it is serious first. Poston said that a team's head coach, its defensive system, its city and money "all come into play" in attracting Arrington.

LB | Lemar Marshall | Washington Redskins | Injury News
The Washington Post reports Washington Redskins LB Lemar Marshall (shoulder) said he is recovering from surgery on his left shoulder, which he said he injured in the final game of the 2005 regular season. Strong Safety

SS | Marquand Manuel | Free Agent Players | Free Agency News
Jose Miguel Romero, of the Seattle Times, reports agent Neil Schwartz denied a report that said free agent S Marquand Manuel (Seahawks) is ready to sign with the Green Bay Packers. "The report is not true," Schwartz said. "It's tampering. We'll go to free agency and keep open the lines of communication." If the Packers and Manuel have discussed a contract, the league could charge Green Bay with tampering because teams can't talk to players from other teams until their contracts expire or they are released.
