The Panthers maintain they want to keep him, but Foster has been less committal. He's a California native with a longing for the West Coast and may be willing to take less money for a chance to play closer to home.

I'm the biggest fan of his maybe that he doesn't know," Linehan gushed. "I don't know if it's appropriate to call him 'Mr. Ram,' but when you think of the Rams, that's who you think of." Faulk has said he was content as a backup in 2005.

Mike Chappell, of the Indianapolis Star, reports Indianapolis Colts DE Dwight Freeney's contract runs through the 2006 season. However, the plan is to sign him to an extension that will make him one of the highest-paid defensive players in the NFL. "We've got to find a way to get that done,'' team president Bill Polian said. "He's not going on the (free agent) market." Freeney triggered an escalator in his rookie contract that boosted his 2006 base salary to $5 million. He will count $6.18 million against the salary cap in 2006.
