Fantasy Baseball Daily Offseason Update: Friday, Jan. 31

First Baseman

1B | Ike Davis | New York Mets | Fantasy
New York Mets manager Terry Collins wants to give 1B Ike Davis 80 to 100 at-bats in spring training so that he doesn't get off to another slow start. Davis had 55 at-bats in Grapefruit League action last year and hit just .147 through May 22.

1B | Carlos Diaz | Baltimore Orioles | Transaction
The Baltimore Orioles purchased the contract of 1B Carlos Diaz from the Mexico City Reds Thursday, Jan. 30, and also signed 3B Jomar Reyes from the Dominican Republic. Executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette said both are "very gifted hitters" and will begin in the Gulf Coast League. Diaz is 17 years old while Reyes is 16.

Second Baseman

2B | Ian Kinsler | Detroit Tigers | Fantasy
The Toronto Blue Jays tried to trade for Detroit Tigers 2B Ian Kinsler this offseason, but Kinsler decided to use his no-trade clause to block the trade. Kinsler was traded to the Tigers during the offseason.

Third Baseman

3B | Wilson Betemit | Tampa Bay Rays | Transaction, Free Agents
The Tampa Bay Rays signed free-agent 3B Wilson Betemit (Orioles) to a minor league deal.

3B | Nolan Arenado | Colorado Rockies | Fantasy
Colorado Rockies 3B Nolan Arenado won a Gold Glove in his rookie season last year, but he's hoping to become more of an impact bat in the team's lineup in 2014. Arenado had a tendency to swing at a lot of pitches during his at-bats. "Nolan has impeccable hand-eye coordination and he's probably going to be a low-strikeout guy, but slowing down his at-bats is the next step," manager Walt Weiss said. Arenado said he often shortened his stroke early in counts to put the ball in play.

3B | Michael Young | Retired Players | Transaction, Fantasy
Free-agent INF Michael Young (Dodgers) has decided to retire despite having three good offers, including one to re-sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Outfielder

OF | Roger Bernadina | Cincinnati Reds | Transaction
The Cincinnati Reds signed free-agent OF Roger Bernadina (Nationals) to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training Friday, Jan. 31.

OF | Corey Brown | Oakland Athletics | Transaction
Oakland Athletics OF Corey Brown cleared waivers and was outrighted to the minors Thursday, Jan. 30.

OF | Nelson Cruz | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
The Seattle Mariners could make a contract offer to free-agent OF Nelson Cruz (Rangers) in the near future.

OF | Curtis Granderson | New York Mets | Fantasy
New York Mets OF Curtis Granderson is set to hit behind 3B David Wright in the batting order, presumably as the Nos. 3 and 4 hitters.

OF | Lucas Duda | New York Mets | Fantasy
New York Mets manager Terry Collins said OF Lucas Duda could be in a "platoon" in the outfield in 2014. OF Chris B. Young is likely to have an everyday role, so if Duda is playing regularly, it would likely mean OF Juan Lagares will be a non-starter.

OF | Eric Young Jr. | New York Mets | Fantasy
New York Mets OF Eric Young Jr. is the club's top candidate to hit leadoff in 2014, according to manager Terry Collins. However, Collins acknowledges that "anything is possible" in spring training. Young's presence in the lineup will likely come at the expense of OF Juan Lagares, and Young could also chip away at OF Chris B. Young's playing time against right-handers. Chris Young is a career .255 hitter against righties and .262 against lefties.

Starting Pitcher

SP | Brett Anderson | Colorado Rockies | Injury, Fantasy,
The Toronto Blue Jays were close to acquiring Colorado Rockies SP Brett Anderson this offseason, but the trade fell through because of concerns about his injury risk.

SP | Jon Niese | New York Mets | Fantasy,
New York Mets manager Terry Collins is "leaning toward" making SP Jon Niese the team's Opening Day starter this year, when the team faces the Washington Nationals. Collins may want to separate right-handed SPs Bartolo Colon and Zack Wheeler, however.

SP | Bruce Chen | Kansas City Royals | Transaction, Fantasy,
The Kansas City Royals re-signed SP Bruce Chen to an undisclosed one-year deal Thursday, Jan. 30. The deal includes a mutual option for the 2015 season. Chen went 9-4 with a 3.27 ERA in 15 starts and 19 relief outings last year.

Relief Pitcher

RP | Manuel Corpas | Colorado Rockies | Transaction,
The Colorado Rockies re-signed RP Manuel Corpas to a minor league deal Thursday, Jan. 31.
