Daily Fantasy Baseball Offseason Update: Wednesday, Dec. 4

by KFFL Staff on December 4, 2013 @ 08:58:27 PDT

First Baseman

1B | Paul Konerko | Chicago White Sox | Transaction, Fantasy
The Chicago White Sox have agreed with DH Paul Konerko, likely to a one-year deal. He will likely have a reduced role in what could be his final season.

1B | Justin Morneau | Colorado Rockies | Transaction, Free Agents, Fantasy
The Colorado Rockies agreed with free-agent 1B Justin Morneau (Pirates) to a two-year, $13 million deal, pending a physical.

The fantasy relevance handbook isn't completely closed on Morneau. Yes, he has been a shell of the player he was before the concussions. However, he's worth the risk in Coors Field later in your drafts for your CI spot.

1B | Corey Hart | free agent | Injury, Free Agents, Fantasy
Free-agent 1B Corey Hart (knee) said he's received clearance to perform full baseball activities.

1B | Garrett Jones | free agent | Transaction, Free Agents,
The Pittsburgh Pirates non-tendered 1B Garrett Jones, C Mike McKenry and SP Kyle McPherson Monday, Dec. 2, making them free agents. C Chris Stewart signed an undisclosed one-year deal to avoid arbitration.

Second Baseman

2B | Kelly Johnson | free agent | Free Agents
The New York Yankees are close to signing free-agent 2B Kelly Johnson (Rays) to a one-year deal worth close to $3 million.

The team plans to use him in a utility role and as insurance in case they can't re-sign 2B Robinson Cano. This deal wouldn't eliminate them from bringing Cano back.

2B | Brandon Phillips | Cincinnati Reds | Fantasy
The Cincinnati Reds are unlikely to trade 2B Brandon Phillips now.

2B | Robinson Cano | free agent | Transaction, Free Agents, Fantasy
The New York Yankees added OF Jacoby Ellsbury to a seven-year deal Tuesday, Dec. 3, but a source said such a deal does not preclude the team from re-signing free-agent 2B Robinson Cano (Yankees). He is still very much in play for the team.

2B | Omar Infante | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
The New York Yankees have made offers to free-agent 2B Omar Infante (Tigers), SS Stephen Drew (Red Sox), OF Jacoby Ellsbury (Red Sox), OF Shin-Soo Choo (Reds) and OF Carlos Beltran (Cardinals).

SS | Jake Smolinski | Texas Rangers | Transaction
The Texas Rangers signed free-agent SS Jake Smolinski (Nationals) to a minor league deal Monday, Dec. 2.

Third Baseman

3B | Eric Chavez | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
The Arizona Diamondbacks have an offer out to re-sign 3B Eric Chavez.

3B | Russ Canzler | New York Yankees | Transaction
The New York Yankees signed free-agent 3B Russ Canzler (Pirates) to a minor league deal Monday, Dec. 2.

C | Brian McCann | New York Yankees | Fantasy
Updating previous items, New York Yankees C Brian McCann will earn $17 million per season from 2014-2018. His 2019 option will vest if he totals 1,000 plate appearances combined in 2017 and 2018, catches 90 games in 2018 and is not on the disabled list at the end of the 2018 season. Should his option vest, McCann has the right to void it and hit the open market.

C | Kurt Suzuki | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
With C A.J. Pierzynski now gone to the Boston Red Sox, the Texas Rangers are looking at C Kurt Suzuki to join the club and serve as backup catcher to C Geovany Soto.

C | Erik Kratz | Toronto Blue Jays | Transaction
The Toronto Blue Jays acquired C Erik Kratz and P Rob Rasmussen from the Philadelphia Phillies Tuesday, Dec. 3, for P Brad Lincoln.

Kratz is expected to serve as the backup to Dioner Navarro, who recently signed a big deal with the club. Kratz has some decent pop, but is only worth a look in deeper AL-only fantasy leagues given his spot on the depth chart.

C | Jarrod Saltalamacchia | Miami Marlins | Fantasy
Miami Marlins C Jarrod Saltalamacchia will receive $6 million next year, $7 million in 2015 and $8 million in 2016. The contract doesn't include a no-trade clause.

C | Wil Nieves | Philadelphia Phillies | Transaction
The Philadelphia Phillies will sign free-agent C Wil Nieves (Diamondbacks) to an undisclosed deal.

C | Rob Brantly | Miami Marlins | Transaction, Fantasy
The Miami Marlins agreed to a three-year, $21 million deal with free-agent C Jarrod Saltalamacchia (Red Sox).

Salty's power is nice for his position, but the move to Miami will temper some of that thump, and his average is bound to come down from last season's .273 mark. Rob Brantly and Jeff Mathis are still on the roster, too, meaning Mathis could form some sort of platoon with Salty if he continues to struggle against southpaws.

C | Ryan Hanigan | Tampa Bay Rays | Fantasy
Tampa Bay Rays C Ryan Hanigan is expected to become the team's primary catcher next season with C Jose Molina serving as the backup.

C | Devin Mesoraco | Cincinnati Reds | Transaction, Fantasy,
The Cincinnati Reds traded C Ryan Hanigan to the Tampa Bay Rays Tuesday, Dec. 3, in exchange for P David Holmberg in a three-team deal that also included the Arizona Diamondbacks. "Devin Mesoraco will have the opportunity to become a front-line catcher for us," general manager Walt Jocketty said. "Holmberg provides us with the quality pitching depth that every team needs."

C | Bobby Wilson | Arizona Diamondbacks | Transaction,
The Arizona Diamondbacks signed free-agent SP Jess Todd (Tigers) and C Bobby Wilson (Yankees) to minor league deals.

OF | Mark Trumbo | Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim | Fantasy
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Mark Trumbo is unlikely to be traded this offseason. The team had been seeking an elite young starter in return.

OF | Carlos Beltran | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
The Kansas City Royals are believed to be the only team willing to offer free-agent OF Carlos Beltran (Cardinals) a three-year deal.

OF | Curtis Granderson | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
The New York Mets are discussing deals from three to five years with free-agent OF Curtis Granderson (Yankees). Granderson is likely seeking close to $17 million annually. The Mets would not have to surrender a first-round pick since their 10th pick overall is protected.

OF | Jacoby Ellsbury | New York Yankees | Transaction, Free Agents, Fantasy
The New York Yankees added OF Jacoby Ellsbury to a seven-year deal Tuesday, Dec. 3, but a source said such a deal does not preclude the team from re-signing free-agent 2B Robinson Cano (Yankees). He is still very much in play for the team.

OF | Shin-Soo Choo | free agent | Transaction, Free Agents, Fantasy
The Boston Red Sox might become a factor for free-agent OF Shin-Soo Choo after failing to re-sign OF Jacoby Ellsbury (Yankees). The team would likely move OF Shane Victorino to center field, with Choo playing in right field.

OF | Nelson Cruz | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
The New York Yankees could focus their attention on free-agent OF Nelson Cruz (Rangers) if they lose out on free-agent OF Carlos Beltran (Cardinals).

OF | Matt Kemp | Los Angeles Dodgers | Fantasy
The Seattle Mariners have been aggressive suitors in a possible trade for Los Angeles Dodgers OF Matt Kemp, according to sources.

OF | Dexter Fowler | Houston Astros | Transaction, Fantasy,
The Houston Astros acquired OF Dexter Fowler and a player to be named from the Colorado Rockies Tuesday, Dec. 3, in exchange for SP Jordan Lyles and OF Brandon Barnes.

Fowler's value doesn't change all that much with the move to Houston, where he'll start in center field. Lyles and Barnes are merely NL-only fodder. Lyles has room to grow, but Coors Field will negate any upside he has left. Barnes is more of a fourth outfield type that might struggle to find consistent playing time, like he did in Houston.

OF | Michael Choice | Texas Rangers | Transaction, Fantasy,
The Texas Rangers acquired OF Michael Choice and INF Chris Bostick from the Oakland Athletics Tuesday, Dec. 3, in exchange for OF Craig Gentry and SP Josh Lindblom. Choice will be on the major league roster while Bostick has been assigned to Single-A Myrtle Beach. Choice was selected 10th overall in the 2010 draft by the Athletics and made his major league debut in September by going 5-for-18 (.278) in nine games. "Michael is a guy we followed in his amateur days literally down the block," general manager Jon Daniels said. "He has a chance to hit and hit for power, is athletic and can play all three outfield spots."

OF | Denis Phipps | Chicago White Sox | Transaction,
The Chicago White Sox signed free-agent OF Denis Phipps (Reds) and RP Jairo Asencio (Orioles) to minor league deals Monday, Dec. 2.

OF | Darnell McDonald | Chicago Cubs | Transaction
The Chicago Cubs re-signed OF Darnell McDonald to a minor league deal.

Starting Pitcher

SP | Brian Gordon | New York Yankees | Transaction,
The New York Yankees signed free-agent SP Brian Gordon (Athletics) to a minor league deal Tuesday, Dec. 3.

SP | Jordan Lyles | Colorado Rockies | Fantasy,
Colorado Rockies SP Jordan Lyles is already drawing trade interest after the team dealt for him Tuesday, Dec. 3. For now, the Rockies plan on keeping him.

SP | Daniel Hudson | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy,
The Arizona Diamondbacks expect to re-sign SP Daniel Hudson after he was non-tendered Monday, Dec. 2.

SP | Brett Anderson | Oakland Athletics | Fantasy,
The New York Yankees are one of many teams showing interest in trading for Oakland Athletics SP Brett Anderson. The A's are likely to deal Anderson at the winter meetings next week.

SP | Carlos Hernandez | Colorado Rockies | Transaction,
The Colorado Rockies signed free-agent SP Carlos Hernandez (Rays) to a minor league deal Monday, Dec. 2.

SP | Eric Stults | San Diego Padres | Transaction, Fantasy,
The San Diego Padres avoided arbitration with SPs Eric Stults and Tim Stauffer Monday, Dec. 2, by agreeing to one-year deals with them. Financial terms were not disclosed.

SP | Doug Fister | Washington Nationals | Transaction, Fantasy,
The Detroit Tigers traded SP Doug Fister to the Washington Nationals Monday, Dec. 2, in exchange for 2B Steve Lombardozzi, SP Ian Krol and P Robbie Ray. SP Drew Smyly will move into the rotation in Detroit to replace Fister. Ray is expected to start next year in the minor leagues. Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said dealing Fister had nothing to do with the hopes that they can sign SP Max Scherzer to a long-term contract before he becomes a free agent. Lombardozzi will serve as a utility infielder for the Tigers.

Relief Pitcher

RP | Brian Wilson | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
Free-agent CL Brian Wilson and the Los Angeles Dodgers are working on a deal that would bring Wilson back to the Dodgers. Updating a previous item, the deal is apparently a one-year contract for an unspecified amount of money. Wilson would then hit the open market again in search of a multi-year contract.

RP | Brad Lincoln | Philadelphia Phillies | Transaction,
The Philadelphia Phillies acquired P Brad Lincoln from the Toronto Blue Jays for C Erik Kratz and P Rob Rasmussen Tuesday, Dec. 3.

Lincoln was once a hot prospect in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, but he has failed to live up to expectations. He is likely to serve as an arm in the bullpen, and as such has very little fantasy appeal outside of the deepest of NL-only formats.

RP | Heath Bell | Tampa Bay Rays | Fantasy,
Tampa Bay Rays executive Andrew Friedman isn't committing to RP Heath Bell as the team's closer next season, but Bell is confident he can come in and win the job.

RP | Luke Gregerson | Oakland Athletics | Transaction, Fantasy,
The Oakland Athletics acquired RP Luke Gregerson from the San Diego Padres Tuesday, Dec. 3, in exchange for OF Seth Smith.

The A's have seriously bolstered the back end of their bullpen the last several days with the acquisitions of Gregerson and Jim Johnson. Johnson figures to get the first crack at closing duties, but Ryan Cook or Gregerson could get some opportunities if he falters. Cook likely would have the upper hand on the ninth inning over Gregerson.

RP | Joe Nathan | Detroit Tigers | Fantasy,
Detroit Tigers RP Joe Nathan will receive around $20 million as part of his two-year deal with the team.

RP | Neftali Feliz | Texas Rangers | Fantasy,
Texas Rangers RP Neftali Feliz made his fourth relief appearance in 10 days Friday, Nov. 29, in the Dominican Republic Winter League. He's in the final stages of his rehab from Tommy John surgery and will be competing with RPs Tanner Scheppers and Joakim Soria for the closer role next year. Feliz pitched 15 1/3 innings from rookie ball to the big leagues last season. He struck out three of the 10 hitters he faced in his first three winter ball outings and allowed only one hit while topping out at 95-97 mph. "Health-wise, he's probably 95 percent with his delivery and all of that," pitching coach Gary Ruby said. "He's thrown very hard, and the changeup has been way above average. The breaking ball needs some work, but he's really close." Feliz is receiving two days of rest after each appearance.

Feliz has plenty of time to get to 100 percent health. If he doesn't suffer any setbacks between now and spring training, he should be considered the favorite to take the ninth-inning duties over Soria or Scheppers.

RP | Michael Bowden | Japanese League | Transaction,
Free-agent RP Michael Bowden (Cubs) signed with the Seibu Lions of the Japanese League Monday, Dec. 2.

RP | Eduardo Sanchez | Detroit Tigers | Transaction,
The Detroit Tigers signed free-agent INF Mike Hessman (Reds) and RP Eduardo Sanchez (Cubs) to minor league deals Monday, Dec. 2.

RP | J.C. Gutierrez | free agent | Transaction, Free Agents,
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim non-tendered RP J.C. Gutierrez Monday, Dec. 2, making him a free agent.
