Quarterback

QB | Geno Smith | New York Jets | Fantasy
New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan continues to say that QB Geno Smith is the team's starting quarterback on a week-to-week basis despite raving about his improved play and the fact that he can "make all the throws." "I'm definitely ready to say he's our starting quarterback this week against Cincinnati," the coach said playfully. Smith currently has more wins than New York Giants QB Eli Manning, a higher completion percentage than New England Patriots QB Tom Brady and more 40-plus-yard passes than New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees and Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck. However, he's also third in the league in interceptions with 11.

We don't buy that Smith is still on a week-to-week basis as the team's starting QB. This is his team, and they'll sink or swim with him. He'll make for a frustrating play as a backup QB thanks to the learning curve that he'll be on in his rookie season.

QB | Blaine Gabbert | Jacksonville Jaguars | Injury, Fantasy
Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbert (hamstring) fully participated in practice Thursday, Oct. 24.

QB | Nick Foles | Philadelphia Eagles | Injury, Fantasy
Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles (concussion) won't practice this week, but he has done some conditioning and attended meetings.

QB | Brett Favre | Retired | Fantasy
The St. Louis Rams contacted retired QB Brett Favre (Vikings) about coming out of retirement to play for the team, but he declined.

QB | Ryan Tannehill | Miami Dolphins | Injury, Fantasy
Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill (shoulder) was limited in practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.

Tannehill should be fine for Week 8's tilt against the New England Patriots. He's a borderline low-end QB1 this weekend against a Pats defense that has been decimated by injuries.

QB | Josh Freeman | Minnesota Vikings | Injury, Fantasy
Minnesota Vikings QB Josh Freeman (concussion) did not practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.

Freeman is not expected to play this weekend, with Christian Ponder taking over. It's conceivable that Ponder could win back the starting job with a nice performance against the Green Bay Packers.

QB | EJ Manuel | Buffalo Bills | Injury, Fantasy
Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel (knee) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.

QB | Peyton Manning | Denver Broncos | Injury, Fantasy
Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning (ankle) was held out of practice with a minor ankle injury Wednesday, Oct. 23. However, he's expected to return to practice Thursday, Oct. 24, and play in Week 8 against the Washington Redskins. "It was (head trainer Steve Antonopulos') call, I didn't go down without a fight, I assure you," Manning said. "… I look forward, hopefully, being out there (Thursday)."

It looks like Manning will be fine for this weekend. Keep him in your lineups.

QB | Michael Vick | Philadelphia Eagles | Injury, Fantasy
Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick (hamstring) practiced in full Wednesday, Oct. 23.

Everything is pointing toward Vick starting against the New York Giants this weekend. When Vick is healthy, he's the starting QB for this team. Consider him a low-end QB1 option in Week 8.

QB | Colin Kaepernick | San Francisco 49ers | Injury, Fantasy
San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (foot) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.

QB | Christian Ponder | Minnesota Vikings | Injury, Fantasy
Updating a previous report, Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder is likely to start in Week 8 against the Green Bay Packers with QB Josh Freeman (concussion) going through concussion protocol this week. Freeman "wasn't feeling so well" after arriving at the team's complex Wednesday, Oct. 23. Ponder will take the first-team repetitions at practice Wednesday and beyond.

Ponder gives the Vikes a better chance for success because he's much more familiar with the offense than Freeman is. Freeman's lack of timing and rust showed in his terrible performance in Week 7. Ponder is only a desperation play for those in two-QB leagues.

Running Back

RB | David Wilson | New York Giants | Injury, Fantasy
New York Giants RB David Wilson (neck) did not participate in practice Thursday, Oct. 24.

RB | Brandon Jacobs | New York Giants | Injury, Fantasy
New York Giants RB Brandon Jacobs (hamstring) did not participate in practice Thursday, Oct. 24.

RB | DeMarco Murray | Dallas Cowboys | Injury, Fantasy
Dallas Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray (knee) is expected to play in Week 8.

RB | Adrian Peterson | Minnesota Vikings | Injury, Fantasy
Updating a previous report, Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson (hamstring) said Wednesday, Oct. 23, that he could feel his right hamstring during the Week 7 game against the New York Giants Monday, Oct. 21. He added it wasn't a huge detriment to his game. While he is expected to see a light workload in practice all week, the injury does not appear to be one that will cause him to miss time.

If you normally rely upon Peterson for fantasy purposes, the rest is actually a good thing. He made his way back from a torn ACL without missing any games, so it's unlikely a nagging hamstring injury is going to force him out.

RB | Fozzy Whittaker | Cleveland Browns | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
While Cleveland Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski said Wednesday, Oct. 23, that RB Fozzy Whittaker will serve as the team's new kickoff return man, he added that WR Travis Benjamin will also see opportunities on kickoffs.

RB | Darren McFadden | Oakland Raiders | Injury, Fantasy
Oakland Raiders RB Darren McFadden was not listed on the injury/practice report Wednesday, Oct. 23. "I don't know percentages. I don't think anyone is 100 percent at this point in time of the year, but he looks explosive," head coach Dennis Allen said.

RB | Rashard Mendenhall | Arizona Cardinals | Injury, Fantasy
Arizona Cardinals RB Rashard Mendenhall (toe) did not practice Wednesday, Oct. 23, due to a toe injury.

RB | Doug Martin | Tampa Bay Buccaneers | Injury, Fantasy
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Doug Martin (shoulder) did not practice Wednesday, Oct. 23, and is ruled out for Week 8.

It's positive for Martin's owners that he's not ruled out for the year, but it'll likely be some time before he's able to return to action. Mike James will start against the Carolina Panthers and should get the majority of touches with Martin sidelined. Consider James an RB2 or flex.

RB | Willis McGahee | Cleveland Browns | Injury, Fantasy
Cleveland Browns RB Willis McGahee (knee) fully participated in practice Thursday, Oct. 23.

RB | Steven Jackson | Atlanta Falcons | Injury, Fantasy
Updating a previous report, Atlanta Falcons RB Steven Jackson (hamstring) was limited in practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.

RB | James Starks | Green Bay Packers | Injury, Fantasy
Updating a previous report, Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (knee) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.

RB | C.J. Spiller | Buffalo Bills | Injury, Fantasy
Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (ankle) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.

It is likely that Spiller will play this week, but this is still something to keep an eye on as the Week goes on.

RB | Fred Jackson | Buffalo Bills | Injury, Fantasy
Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (knee) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.

Jackson is likely to play this week, short of a setback, still keep an eye on this one moving forward, and plan on using him as you normally would, for now.

RB | Mark Ingram | New Orleans Saints | Injury, Fantasy
New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram (toe) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.

RB | Jonathan Stewart | Carolina Panthers | Injury, Fantasy
Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said the team is targeting Week 9 for when RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle) will return to the field. Stewart will travel with the team for their Week 8 game but will not play.

RB | Frank Gore | San Francisco 49ers | Injury, Fantasy
San Francisco 49ers RB Frank Gore (ankle) was limited during practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.

Wide Receiver

WR | Calvin Johnson | Detroit Lions | Injury, Fantasy
Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (knee) was participating in the portion of practice open to the media Thursday, Oct. 24.

Good news to see Johnson on the practice field. At this point, there is no reason to think Johnson won’t play this week. Get him in your lineups as you normally would.

WR | Cecil Shorts | Jacksonville Jaguars | Injury, Fantasy
Updating a previous report, Jacksonville Jaguars WR Cecil Shorts (shoulder) was limited in practice Thursday, Oct. 24.

WR | Justin Blackmon | Jacksonville Jaguars | Injury, Fantasy
Updating a previous report, Jacksonville Jaguars WR Justin Blackmon (hamstring) was limited in practice Thursday, Oct 24.

WR | Percy Harvin | Seattle Seahawks | Injury, Fantasy
Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said WR Percy Harvin (hip) has to have a normal week of practice in order to have a shot at playing in Week 8. "He's got to get through normal days of practice and we'll see how he handles it," Carroll said. "With the thought we've been going with all along is to take the conservative approach and make sure our guys are healthy and so we're going to continue to do that. We've waited this long to get him here; to this point. So we'll just continue to take our time and see how he goes. The workload will increase, as we go through the week and next week and all that and we'll just see what happens."

WR | Travis Benjamin | Cleveland Browns | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
While Cleveland Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski said Wednesday, Oct. 23, that RB Fozzy Whittaker will serve as the team's new kickoff return man, he added that WR Travis Benjamin will also see opportunities on kickoffs.

WR | Josh Gordon | Cleveland Browns | Transaction, Fantasy
Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon said Wednesday, Oct. 23, that it is his understanding that another violation of the league's substance abuse policy would result in a season-long suspension, which might be part of the reason the team is open to dealing him. Gordon said he is glad head coach Rob Chudzinski has supported him, and he wants to make a difference for the team. "I'm here in Cleveland, and I want to make a difference here in Cleveland. This is where I am right now. Whatever happens tomorrow, I'll have to deal with that then. But my head and my space is right here, and that's what I'm focusing on," Gordon said.

WR | Larry Fitzgerald | Arizona Cardinals | Injury, Fantasy
Updating a previous report, Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald (hamstring) was listed as a full participant in practice Wednesday, Oct. 23

Head coach Bruce Arians said Tuesday he was considering holding Fitzgerald out, so the fact Fitzgerald was able to not only practice on a limited basis, but practice fully, certainly should make fantasy owners feel much better about the receiver's chances of playing in Week 8.

WR | Julian Edelman | New England Patriots | Injury, Fantasy
New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman (thigh) was limited in practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.

WR | Danny Amendola | New England Patriots | Injury, Fantasy
New England Patriots WR Danny Amendola (concussion, groin) was limited in practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.

It's a good sign that Amendola returned to practice in a limited fashion, but he's yet to be cleared to suit up in Week 8 against the Miami Dolphins. Until he is, make plans to go with other options.

WR | Mike Williams | Tampa Bay Buccaneers | Injury, Fantasy
Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Mike Williams (hamstring) practiced in full Wednesday, Oct. 23, but is questionable for Week 8.

The good news is that he practiced in full, which likely means he'll play on Thursday night. However, he probably won't be 100 percent healthy, and Vincent Jackson has become Mike Glennon's go-to wideout. Williams is a weak flex play right now.

WR | Roddy White | Atlanta Falcons | Injury, Fantasy
Atlanta Falcons WR Roddy White (hamstring, ankle) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.

This has become the regular routine of White’s 2013 season. Even if he does play, he is likely to once again be extremely limited. Avoid putting him in your fantasy football lineup if you can.

WR | Dez Bryant | Dallas Cowboys | Injury, Fantasy
Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (hamstring, wrist) was limited in practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.

Nothing has indicated that Bryant is in danger of missing or being limited this weekend against the Detroit Lions. He has extra motivation (proving he's just as good as Calvin Johnson), too. A big game could be in store.

WR | Miles Austin | Dallas Cowboys | Injury, Fantasy
Dallas Cowboys WR Miles Austin (hamstring) was limited in practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.

Austin played only 37 of 77 offensive snaps in Week 7 and went without a catch for the second straight week - he's clearly hampered by his left hamstring ailment, and the team could decide to hold him out this weekend. He's an extremely risky option in Week 8. If you can, go elsewhere.

WR | Dwayne Harris | Dallas Cowboys | Injury, Fantasy
Dallas Cowboys WR Dwayne Harris (hip) practiced in full Wednesday, Oct. 23.

WR | Leonard Hankerson | Washington Redskins | Injury, Fantasy
Washington Redskins WR Leonard Hankerson (foot) did not practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.

The seriousness of Hankerson's foot injury isn't known, so continue to check on his status throughout the week. If he's playing, consider him a strong flex option in his matchup against the Denver Broncos, who rank dead last in defending the pass this year.

WR | Wes Welker | Denver Broncos | Injury, Fantasy
Denver Broncos WR Wes Welker (ankle) did not practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.

Welker has been listed with the ankle injury on the injury report several times this season. It appears to be nothing serious, and the Broncos were likely giving him the day off. Leave him in your lineups unless he suffers some sort of setback.

WR | Eric Decker | Denver Broncos | Injury, Fantasy
Denver Broncos WR Eric Decker (toe) did not practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.

This is a new injury for Decker but it's unclear how serious of an ailment it is. Keep tabs on his status for the rest of the week. If he's able to suit up, he's a must-start for fantasy football players.

WR | Lance Moore | New Orleans Saints | Injury, Fantasy
New Orleans Saints WR Lance Moore (hand) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.

WR | Santonio Holmes | New York Jets | Injury, Fantasy
New York Jets WR Santonio Holmes (hamstring) did not practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.

Holmes is not expected to play this weekend. Jeremy Kerley and Stephen Hill will continue to benefit from his absence. Holmes could be returning soon, though, so if he's still on the waiver wire, consider adding him for future weeks.

WR | Jeremy Kerley | New York Jets | Injury, Fantasy
New York Jets WR Santonio Holmes (hamstring) did not practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.

Holmes is not expected to play this weekend. Jeremy Kerley and Stephen Hill will continue to benefit from his absence. Holmes could be returning soon, though, so if he's still on the waiver wire, consider adding him for future weeks.

WR | Marvin Jones | Cincinnati Bengals | Injury, Fantasy
Cincinnati Bengals WR Marvin Jones (shoulder), LB Rey Maualuga (hamstring) and CB Terence Newman (ankle) did not practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.

WR | Hakeem Nicks | New York Giants | Fantasy
New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said the team needs more reliability from WR Hakeem Nicks moving forward. Coughlin said Nicks needs to "get to the point where the reliability factor is there as strongly as it always has been."

Nicks has not only struggled with dropped passes while dealing with an injured finger, but he has failed to gain separation from defenders. He's been a very frustrating fantasy football commodity this year, and not much may change unless he's traded before next week.

WR | James Jones | Green Bay Packers | Injury, Fantasy
Green Bay Packers WR James Jones (knee) is not participating in practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.

It's likely that Jones will miss his second straight game with the knee ailment. Jarrett Boykin will continue to benefit from Jones' absence, especially now that Jermichael Finley (spine) is also sidelined.

WR | Mike Brown | Jacksonville Jaguars | Injury, Fantasy
Jacksonville Jaguars WRs Ace Sanders (concussion) and Stephen Burton (concussion) were both cleared from the league's concussion protocol and practiced Wednesday, Oct. 23. WR Mike Brown (back) is also fully recovered from the fractured vertebrae in his back. He had five catches for 120 yards in Week 7 against the San Diego Chargers.

WR | Brandon LaFell | Carolina Panthers | Injury, Fantasy
Carolina Panthers WR Brandon LaFell (knee) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Oct. 23, and is listed as probable for Week 8.

Owners should see LaFell as a low-end No. 2 wide receiver or a flex option this week.

Tight End

TE | Jermichael Finley | Green Bay Packers | Injury, Fantasy
Cleveland Browns FS Tashaun Gipson said Wednesday, Oct. 23, that he has reached out to Green Bay Packers TE Jermichael Finley (spine) via text message, but he wouldn't reveal the content or whether Finley responded. Finley suffered a spinal cord contusion when Gipson used his shoulder to hit Finley's helmet in the Week 7 game. "It was a scary feeling, scary sight, just seeing a guy's body limp like that out there," Gipson said. "You definitely never want to see something like that happen. To hear the latter effects of it, it's definitely unfortunate. All I can do is keep him in my prayers. I know he has family and he has kids. I've got kids. I know I wouldn't want one of my kids to see their dad like that."

TE | Rob Gronkowski | New England Patriots | Injury, Fantasy
New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (forearm, back) was limited in practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.

Expect Gronkowski to be good to go this week.

TE | Jordan Reed | Washington Redskins | Injury, Fantasy
Washington Redskins TE Jordan Reed (hip) practiced in full Wednesday, Oct. 23.

Reed suffered a hip pointer injury in Week 7, but it's not serious. He's expected to suit up. Reed has become a midrange TE1 option with upside for more. He has a great matchup this weekend against the Denver Broncos, too. He needs to be owned in all leagues.

TE | Heath Miller | Pittsburgh Steelers | Injury, Fantasy
Pittsburgh Steelers TE Heath Miller (non-injury) was limited during practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.

TE | Jeff Cumberland | New York Jets | Injury, Fantasy
New York Jets TE Jeff Cumberland (hamstring) did not practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.

There is no word on how serious Cumberland's injury is. We may not know until we see his practice status over the next two days. With Kellen Winslow suspended, he's become a decent bye week filler as a low-end TE1.

TE | Jimmy Graham | New Orleans Saints | Injury, Fantasy
New Orleans Saints TE Jimmy Graham (foot) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Oct. 23. "Each day we'll just take a peek on how he's progressing and be smart about it," head coach Sean Payton said.

There was hope that Graham would be able to return this week, so you would like to see him hit the practice field at some point. Still, there is a long way to go until game day. Check back throughout the week on his status.

TE | Tony Moeaki | Free Agent | Injury, Transaction, Fantasy
Updating a previous report, the Kansas City Chiefs have waived TE Tony Moeaki (scapula) from the Injured Reserve list after the two sides reached an injury settlement.

TE | Vernon Davis | San Francisco 49ers | Injury, Fantasy
San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis (hamstring) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.

TE | Greg Olsen | Carolina Panthers | Injury, Fantasy
Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen (foot) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Oct. 23, and is listed as probable for Week 8.

Olsen probably will be more a flex option for owners this week because of the matchup but could also be viewed as a low-end No. 1 tight end.

Place Kicker

PK | Blair Walsh | Minnesota Vikings | Injury, Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Minnesota Vikings PK Blair Walsh (hamstring) has been bothered by a nagging left hamstring injury, and it is partially to blame for a missed 53-yard field goal in the Week 7 game against the New York Giants Monday, Oct. 21. It was his first career miss from longer than 50 yards. He also has ceded kickoff duties to P Jeff Locke as a result of the injury.
