First Baseman

1B | Justin Morneau | Pittsburgh Pirates | Free Agents, Fantasy,
The Minnesota Twins may have as much as $40 million to spend on free-agent acquisitions in the offseason, according to team sources. The contracts of 1B Justin Morneau, SP Nick Blackburn and SP Mike Pelfrey all come off the books, leaving the club with $60 million on its payroll. The Twins, who had an $82 million payroll last year, are looking at a $90-$100 million payroll in 2014.

1B | Corey Hart | Milwaukee Brewers | Free Agents, Fantasy
Milwaukee Brewers impending free-agent 1B Corey Hart (knees) said he would be willing to accept a significant discount in order to re-sign with the Brewers this offseason. Hart said the two sides have not had any contract talks at this point.

1B | Adrian Gonzalez | Los Angeles Dodgers | Injury, Fantasy
Los Angeles Dodgers 1B Adrian Gonzalez (quadriceps) sat out Thursday, Sept. 19, with a sore quadriceps.

Now that the Dodgers have clinched the division, expect the Blue to rest their stars more frequently in this final week, including A-Gon.

1B | Edwin Encarnacion | Toronto Blue Jays | Injury, Fantasy
Toronto Blue Jays 1B Edwin Encarnacion (wrist) underwent successful surgery on his wrist Thursday, Sept. 19, and will need two months to recover.

1B | Lance Berkman | Texas Rangers | Injury, Fantasy
Texas Rangers 1B Lance Berkman (hip, knee) has gone 0-for-12 in five games since returning from the disabled list and still is unable to swing from the right side. "I know he hasn't done a heck of a lot, but he's one of those guys who can wake up on a cold day with snow out there and get a base hit," manager Ron Washington said.

Berkman won't see enough action in the final week to justify keeping him around on your roster. Texas is unlikely to carry him on their playoff roster, too, if he continues to battle injuries.

Second Baseman

2B | Wilfredo Tovar | New York Mets | Transaction
The New York Mets recalled 2B Wilfredo Tovar from Double-A Binghamton Thursday, Sept. 19.

Shortstop

SS | Javier Baez | Chicago Cubs | Fantasy
Chicago Cubs SS Javier Baez will skip the Arizona Fall League so that he can rest for next season. "He's emotionally and physically drained after the season," general manager Jed Hoyer said. "We have no problem with (him missing the AFL)." Baez was the team's Minor League Player of the Year after hitting .282 with 37 home runs and 111 RBIs in 130 games with Single-A Daytona and Double-A Tennessee this year.

SS | Jose Iglesias | Detroit Tigers | Injury, Fantasy

Third Baseman

3B | Alex Rodriguez | New York Yankees | Injury, Fantasy
New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi said 3B Alex Rodriguez (hamstring) could be used as a designated hitter for the rest of the season because of his hamstring injury.

Catcher

C | Joe Mauer | Minnesota Twins | Injury, Fantasy
Minnesota Twins C Joe Mauer (concussion) provided some encouraging signs during his workout Thursday, Sept. 19, and the team is optimistic that he will play in the final week of the season. However, Mauer has yet to resume baseball activities, but will shortly. He no longer has headaches or is experiencing concussion-related symptoms. "So there's some positive news on that," general manager Terry Ryan said. "Slowly and surely he's getting better and today was one of the better days. He'll be back at the stadium tomorrow. We'll take him when we can get him. He didn't do any baseball activity but he did some of the leg work and that type of stuff. That's better than I've been telling you. He's making some progress."

Hold onto him if you must, but we don't see Mauer making any real impact to push your fantasy squad over the hump to capture that elusive title. It's probably best to look elsewhere in this final week and a half.

C | Welington Castillo | Chicago Cubs | Injury
Chicago Cubs C Welington Castillo (knee) said he will have his injured knee examined Friday, Sept. 20. Castillo had to leave the team's game Thursday, Sept. 19, because of knee soreness.

Castro should be fine for spring training next year, and he'll be a popular catcher pick in drafts based on his fine showing in 2013.

C | Russell Martin | Pittsburgh Pirates | Fantasy
Pittsburgh Pirates C Russell Martin was rested Wednesday, Sept. 18, and will sit out again Thursday, Sept. 19, as manager Clint Hurdle wants him to be rested for a weekend series against the Cincinnati Reds.

The Washington Nationals have acquired P Matthew Spann from the Tampa Bay Rays to complete last month's trade for OF David DeJesus, the team announced via press release. The Nationals acquired DeJesus from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for a player to be named later but quickly flipped him to the Rays just a few days later.

SP | Matt Shoemaker | Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim | Injury, Fantasy,
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver (forearm) has been scratched from his next scheduled start against the Seattle Mariners Friday, Sept. 20, with right forearm tightness. SP Matt Shoemaker, who was called up from Triple-A Salt Lake earlier this week, will make the start in his place. The Angels could decide to shut Weaver down for the rest of the year.
