Is Le'Veon Bell's foot injury serious? Plus 27 other fantasy football headlines

by KFFL Staff on August 21, 2013 @ 09:37:51 PDT

QB | Geno Smith | New York Jets | Fantasy
New York Jets QB Geno Smith could win the starting quarterback job this weekend with if he's able to avoid turnovers in the third preseason game.

QB | Alex Smith | Kansas City Chiefs | Draft, Fantasy
Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith was the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers last year when they drafted WR A.J. Jenkins in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. The deal to acquire Jenkins wasn't Smith's, but the management did ask the signal caller for his input. "We talked to Alex," head coach Andy Reid said Tuesday, Aug. 20. "Alex was very positive about it."

QB | Nick Foles | Philadelphia Eagles | Fantasy
The Philadelphia Eagles are unlikely to trade QB Nick Foles now that he's been named the backup to QB Michael Vick.

Foles obviously shouldn't be drafted now that he'll start the year holding a clipboard. But Vick's scrambling style leaves him open to injury, so if he gets injured, Foles will step in and could be worth a waiver-wire pick pickup.

QB | Aaron Rodgers | Green Bay Packers | Injury, Fantasy
Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers (illness) did not participate in practice Tuesday, Aug. 20. It is expected that Rodgers will return to practice Wednesday, Aug. 21.

QB | Jay Cutler | Chicago Bears | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler is expected to be on the field for a minimum of one half in the preseason game Friday, Aug. 23, against the Oakland Raiders. Backup QB Josh McCown is expected to play in the third quarter, with QB Jordan Palmer scheduled to play the fourth quarter.

Running Back

RB | Le'Veon Bell | Pittsburgh Steelers | Injury, Fantasy
Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (foot) is expected to miss at least several weeks because of the foot injury he suffered in the second preseason game. The team has not completely diagnosed Bell's injury at this point.

If Bell is not able to play Week 1, Isaac Redman or Jonathan Dwyer likely would get the start. Either would be considered a flex option if they got the start.

RB | Trent Richardson | Cleveland Browns | Fantasy
Cleveland Browns RB Trent Richardson absorbed a big hit from Detroit Lions DT Ndamukong Suh in the preseason game over the weekend. Despite the big hit, he made it through the game healthy. "I feel good," Richardson said. "I finally got a real big hit. I didn't feel it at the time, but a couple days later, it was like, 'Aah, this man did hit me pretty hard.' But it was fun."

RB | Dion Lewis | Cleveland Browns | Injury, Fantasy
The Cleveland Browns are likely to place RB Dion Lewis (fibula) on the season-ending Injured Reserve list due to his fractured left fibula, according to head coach Rob Chudzinski.

RB | Steven Miller | Detroit Lions | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
The punt and kick return jobs for the Detroit Lions appear to be down to RB Steven Miller or WR Patrick Edwards, as those two players have received a bulk of the work during the past two practices. WR Micheal Spurlock has also been in the mix.

RB | Jonathan Stewart | Carolina Panthers | Injury, Fantasy
Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankles) will not play in the team's third preseason game Thursday, Aug. 22, and the club isn't ruling out placing him on the Physically Unable to Perform list, which would cause him to miss at least the first six weeks of the season. "At this point anything is an option," head coach Ron Rivera said. "What you're hoping is you can get him on the football field and we'll see once the doctor gets a chance to look at him." Stewart has yet to practice with the team and will meet with doctors soon. RB DeAngelo Williams has been taking reps with the first-team offense, and RB Kenjon Barner has seen increased opportunity.

Obviously, this makes Stewart a very risky running back selection. Williams' stock is rising as a result, but neither is attractive as anything more than a very weak RB3. With Mike Tolbert and Barner in the picture, too, this may be one of those running back situations to steer clear of on draft day.

RB | Zac Stacy | St. Louis Rams | Fantasy
St. Louis Rams RBs Benny Cunningham and Zac Stacy have been impressive during the preseason, and head coach Jeff Fisher refused to indicate who would be the immediate backup behind RB Daryl Richardson. Both Cunningham and Stacy are more physical than RB Isaiah Pead, and Cunningham is effective as a punt protector and potential kick returner. Cunningham and Stacy have also shown they can catch the ball out of the backfield. Pead has already fumbled once in the preseason and will miss Week 1 for a drug suspension. Not helping his cause is the fact that he didn't gain much yardage in two games and also was indecisive as a kick returner. However, he's improved in pass protection, and the Rams are unlikely to move on from him after one season.

Pead isn't very physical and there's a question whether he'll be able to hold up in the NFL. He's not off to a great start this year, and he shouldn't be a priority to draft as a handcuff to Richardson. That designation may ultimately fall to the rookie Stacy.

Wide Receiver

WR | Aaron Dobson | New England Patriots | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
New England Patriots WRs Aaron Dobson and Josh Boyce have worked with QB Tom Brady more than veteran WR Julian Edelman over the first two preseason games. Dobson has seen 10 snaps with the starter, while Boyce has been on the field for 15 snaps.

Dobson and Boyce could be primed to see a big role in the offense, or they simply could be seeing more work than the veteran because the team wants to see what the youngsters can do in game action. It's unclear at the moment. What is clear is that the receiving situation in New England is muddled, and really only Danny Amendola is worth anything more than a late-round pick on draft day.

WR | Kenbrell Thompkins | New England Patriots | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
New England Patriots WR Kenbrell Thompkins has played 29 snaps in two preseason games with QB Tom Brady. That is second-most on the team. It is unclear if Thompkins has the leg up for the No. 2 job, or whether the team is simply using the rookie to determine what they have in Thompkins.

WR | Tavon Austin | St. Louis Rams | Fantasy
St. Louis Rams WR Tavon Austin (personal) and DE Eugene Sims (personal) were each excused from practice Tuesday, Aug. 20, to tend to personal matters.

WR | Patrick Edwards | Detroit Lions | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
The punt and kick return jobs for the Detroit Lions appear to be down to RB Steven Miller or WR Patrick Edwards, as those two players have received a bulk of the work during the past two practices. WR Micheal Spurlock has also been in the mix.

WR | Santonio Holmes | New York Jets | Injury, Fantasy
The New York Jets are hopeful WR Santonio Holmes (foot) will be ready for the regular season opener. He was able to work out before the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 17, and he appeared sharp running routes at three-quarters speed and catching passes. General manager John Idzik said in a radio interview that Holmes is "getting close" to practicing.

WR | Marques Colston | New Orleans Saints | Injury, Fantasy
New Orleans Saints WR Marques Colston (foot) said he's not 100 percent healthy despite practicing for the second straight day Tuesday, Aug. 20. "That's OK," Colston said. "I'm working towards it. I still have couple of weeks yet (until the regular-season opener vs. Atlanta). I'm still taking my time with it." Colston doesn't know if he'll play this weekend in the third preseason game.

As Drew Brees notes in the article, Colston has battled through nagging injuries like this his entire career, so he should be fine, and he'd probably be playing were it the regular season. However, the foot injury has lingered since last season. Expect him to be ready for Week 1. Colston is a solid No. 2 wideout in the Saints' high-flying aerial attack.

WR | Armanti Edwards | Carolina Panthers | Injury, Fantasy
Carolina Panthers WR Armanti Edwards (hamstring) has impressed the coaching staff in training camp and the preseason and has been listed as the third receiver behind WRs Steve Smith and Brandon LaFell. WRs Domenik Hixon, David Gettis and Ted Ginn Jr. are battling with Edwards. Edwards spent some time dealing with a hamstring injury which kept him out of the team's second preseason game. The door has reopened for Gettis because of the ailment, and he was impressive with five catches for 82 yards in the second preseason game. It now looks like a wide open race for the No. 3 spot.

Gettis might be the most intriguing receiver in the lot, but none of these options should be drafted.

WR | Jacoby Ford | Oakland Raiders | Injury, Fantasy
Oakland Raiders WR Jacoby Ford (knee) was participating in practice Tuesday, Aug. 20, for the second straight day.

WR | Calvin Johnson | Detroit Lions | Injury, Fantasy
Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (knee) is not participating in practice Tuesday, Aug. 20. Johnson said the plan is to play in the team's preseason game Thursday, Aug. 20.

With Johnson wanting to play in the team's preseason game, it does not appear this is a serious issue and that he is close to being ready to play.

Tight End

TE | Tony Gonzalez | Atlanta Falcons | Fantasy
Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith said Tuesday, Aug. 20, that TE Tony Gonzalez will work with the first-team offense and play extensively in his first preseason game Saturday, Aug. 24, against the Tennessee Titans. "Tony is in great shape like he always is," Smith said. "He'll play just like the rest of the starters. We're not going to have a specific number and say all starters are playing this number of snaps."

TE | Jermichael Finley | Green Bay Packers | Fantasy
Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said TE Jermichael Finley is having his best training camp. Finley added weight in the offseason, which has helped him become a better blocker. "We're asking him to do the dirty work again that he wasn't asked to do as much the last two years and I think he's doing a good job of it," McCarthy said.

While it's great that the underachieving Finley is having a great camp, the quote from McCarthy adds some skepticism. It sounds like the team plans to use him more in protection, which will likely hurt his receiving totals. He's a low-end TE1, but there are concerns as to how many targets he'll receive.

TE | Joseph Fauria | Detroit Lions | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Detroit Lions TE Joseph Fauria might see more playing time in the preseason game Thursday, Aug. 22, against the New England Patriots, and it might cut into TE Tony Scheffler's reps. However, despite fewer practice reps for Scheffler, the team insists the veteran is still part of the plans in 2013.

TE | Vance McDonald | San Francisco 49ers | Injury, Fantasy
San Francisco 49ers TE Vance McDonald (undisclosed) is back at practice Tuesday, Aug. 20.

TE | Heath Miller | Pittsburgh Steelers | Injury, Fantasy
Pittsburgh Steelers TE Heath Miller (knee) is likely to return to practice before the team opens up the season. It is possible Miller could return to game action in the early part of the season.

TE | Brandon Bostick | Green Bay Packers | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Green Bay Packers TE Brandon Bostick has reportedly had a good training camp and preseason, and he is pushing for a spot on the 53-man roster. He added 10 pounds since last season, and he worked with TE Jermichael Finley during the offseason to improve his game. "When I was with Jermichael, we worked on route-running, blocking and getting stronger. I put all that stuff together and tried to be the best player I can be every time we go out there," Bostick said.

Place Kicker

PK | Jay Feely | Arizona Cardinals | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Arizona Cardinals PK Jay Feely has company, as the team signed PK Dan Carpenter (Dolphins) Wednesday, Aug. 21. The two have a history, as the Dolphins cut Feely in Aug. 2008 in favor of Carpenter.

The two kickers will be battling for the starting job in Glendale. Whoever emerges as the winner of the battle will simply be a bye-week replacement for most fantasy owners.

PK | Rian Lindell | Tampa Bay Buccaneers | Transaction, Free Agents, Fantasy
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers agreed to terms with free-agent PK Rian Lindell (Bills) Tuesday, Aug. 20, according to a team source.
