QB | Tom Brady | New England Patriots | Injury, Fantasy
New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (knee) has been cleared medically to play in the team's second preseason game and will start against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Friday, Aug. 16. All three Patriots quarterbacks are expected to play.
QB | Michael Vick | Philadelphia Eagles | Fantasy
Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick was 9-for-10 for 105 yards and an interception in the second preseason game Thursday, Aug. 15. The interception was on a Hail Mary pass as the first-half clock expired. QB Nick Foles was 6-for-8 for 53 yards and threw an interception in the end zone.
Fantasy Tip: Vick may have pulled ahead after this performance. We'll know more next week.
QB | Alex Smith | Kansas City Chiefs | Fantasy
Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith has been a success early this preseason, and he's shown to be a leader in training camp in head coach Andy Reid's system. "He's a smart guy," Reid said of his quarterback. "He gets it. He makes it easy. He doesn't run out of gigabytes."
Fantasy Tip: Smith won't be asked to carry the team. He isn't that type of quarterback. However, if he limits his mistakes and makes smart decisions, he could be a big surprise. The upside is limited, though, and he won't put up the numbers to make him anything more than a weak QB2, most likely.
QB | Geno Smith | New York Jets | Injury, Fantasy
New York Jets general manager John Idzik allowed QB Geno Smith (ankle) to resume practicing Sunday, Aug. 11, knowing that he was bothered by a sprained ankle. Idzik is a big proponent of Smith in the quarterback competition with QB Mark Sanchez, and he's made it known that he has the final say on that matter over head coach Rex Ryan. Smith had his worst day of practice Wednesday, Aug. 14, and Ryan admitted that his ankle was not 100 percent. Sanchez is likely to win the job if Smith doesn't play in the team's second preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Fantasy Tip: Sanchez had a leg up all along, but Smith's ankle injury has set him back considerably. This doesn't mean that Smith won't eventually become the starter at some point this year if Sanchez struggles early. Avoid both QBs in shallow formats.
QB | Robert Griffin III | Washington Redskins | Injury, Fantasy
Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (knee) completed 14-of-15 passes on 21 snaps against the scout-team defense during practice Thursday, Aug. 15.
QB | Joe Flacco | Baltimore Ravens | Fantasy
Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco praised the team's new look defense, and believes they can be dominant in 2013. "I tell you what, our defense looks really good," Flacco said. "The front seven, those guys look like they're going to be dominant. Our secondary, you can argue that it's better than it's ever been. ... I think we have a pretty special group and I think it's going to be exciting to watch those guys go after it this year."
RB | Dion Lewis | Cleveland Browns | Injury, Fantasy
The Cleveland Browns are trying to determine if the fracture suffered by RB Dion Lewis (leg) is a season-ending injury or if Lewis is a candidate for short-term Injured Reserve that will keep him out of the lineup for eight weeks.
RB | Mikel Leshoure | Detroit Lions | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Detroit Lions RB Mikel Leshoure received one carry in the preseason game Thursday, Aug. 15.
Fantasy Tip: Joique Bell is clearly ahead of him on the depth chart, and Leshoure doesn't even make a good handcuff right now.
RB | Le'Veon Bell | Pittsburgh Steelers | Injury, Fantasy
Updating previous reports, Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (knee) aggravated his left knee Thursday, Aug. 15, when a teammate hit him in a non-contact drill. Bell didn't take another snap and had his left leg heavily wrapped after practice.
Fantasy Tip: Monitor Bell's progress over the next few days, but this injury doesn't appear to be too serious. Isaac Redman would be the next man up if Bell misses time. Jonathan Dwyer is also a possibility. Bell, if healthy, will receive the lion's share of the workload out of the backfield, though, making Redman and Dwyer unnatractive in most drafts.
RB | Knowshon Moreno | Denver Broncos | Injury
Denver Broncos RBs Knowshon Moreno (knee) and Jeremiah Johnson (knee), WRs Quincy McDuffie (hamstring), Greg Orton (ankle) and Lamaar Thomas (concussion), FS Quinton Carter (knee) and TE Joel Dreessen (knee) did not practice Thursday, Aug. 15.
RB | Jamaal Charles | Kansas City Chiefs | Fantasy
Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles has adapted well to the new offensive scheme under head coach Andy Reid, and he's embracing the opportunity to catch more passes out of the backfield. Charles touched the ball on eight of the 14 plays for the first-team offense in the first preseason game.
Fantasy Tip: Charles will be a huge part of this offense and will be extremely valuable in PPR leagues. Consider him a top-three running back in those formats, and he should go in the top five in all leagues.
RB | David Wilson | New York Giants | Fantasy
New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin indicated the team will pick when to use RB David Wilson as a kick returner instead of using him in the role on a full-time basis.
RB | Eddie Lacy | Green Bay Packers | Injury, Fantasy
Green Bay Packers RB Coach Alex Van Pelt praised RB Eddie Lacy (hamstring), saying he shows great patience and reads the game well. "He's a patient runner," Van Pelt said of Lacy. "But once that decision has been made, it's north and south. That's the strong point of him. You rarely see him make a bad read in the running game. It's just a natural thing as a runner.
"He's always on track, he's always making the right reads and anticipates where the hole is going to be."
There is a chance Lacy could be held out of the team's second preseason game as he continues to work his way back from a hamstring issue.
Fantasy Tip: Lacy should get most of the work out of the Packers backfield, and it appears he is close to putting his injury issues behind him.
WR | Donte' Stallworth | Washington Redskins | Injury, Fantasy
Washington Redskins WR Donte' Stallworth (hamstring) and OL Jacolby Ashworth (ankle, knee, hips) have been ruled out of the teams second preseason game Monday, Aug. 19.
WR | Roddy White | Atlanta Falcons | Injury, Fantasy
Updating a previous report, Atlanta Falcons WR Roddy White (ankle) had an MRI on what is believed to be a low-ankle sprain.
WR | Vincent Brown | San Diego Chargers | Fantasy
San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers said he believes WR Vincent Brown has everything a team looks for in a wide receiver and thinks Brown could have a big role on the offense this season. "He's an easy guy to throw the ball to," Rivers said. "He's so smooth, so strong to the ball, so sharp. ... If he can be out there on a consistent basis, which obviously if he is healthy he will be, people are going to say, 'Shoot, he's one of the staples of (their) offense.'"
WR | Marquise Goodwin | Buffalo Bills | Fantasy
Buffalo Bills WR Marquise Goodwin's speed has made him stand out in the passing game during practices. He connected on a deep pass with QB EJ Manuel and scored a touchdown in practice Wednesday, Aug. 14, and also scored on a quick slant from QB Kevin Kolb later in the day. His speed causes defenders to back off him at the line of scrimmage.
Fantasy Tip: Depending on what happens with the team's QB situation, Buffalo's receiving targets could be very explosive and fly under the radar. Goodwin has a ways to go to become fantasy-relevant, though, with the likes of Stevie Johnson, Robert Woods and T.J. Graham ahead of him on the depth chart.
WR | Stevie Johnson | Buffalo Bills | Injury, Fantasy
Buffalo Bills WRs Stevie Johnson (hamstring) and Brad Smith (hamstring) both returned to practice Wednesday, Aug. 14, and they both took part in individual position drills and some repetitions in 7-on-7 drills. "I was happy to see Stevie Johnson out here," said head coach Doug Marrone. "He had good work. I'm not going to play him in this upcoming game, but again it was great to see him out there along with Brad Smith." The team is hoping to have Johnson back at full strength next week.
Fantasy Tip: Buffalo's uncertain QB situation has dropped Johnson's value a tad this season. He should be completely healthy by Week 1, and he still presents a solid wide receiver talent as a WR2 or 3.
WR | Donnie Avery | Kansas City Chiefs | Fantasy
Kansas City Chiefs WR Donnie Avery is likely to be the team's No. 2 receiver opposite WR Dwayne Bowe, but the team would like to see WR Jonathan Baldwin finally step up.
Fantasy Tip: Avery and Baldwin are both mildly intriguing in their own right. Avery could be a PPR steal if he wins the No. 2 job. Baldwin has all the physical tools but continues to disappoint on game day. Consider both decent late-game gambles with upside.
WR | A.J. Green | Cincinnati Bengals | Injury, Fantasy
Cincinnati Bengals WR A.J. Green (knee) said he does not expect to play in the team's second preseason game but is not certain about his status. Green returned to practice Wednesday, Aug. 14, and took part in practice Thursday, Aug. 15.
TE | Coby Fleener | Indianapolis Colts | Injury, Fantasy
Indianapolis Colts TE Coby Fleener (concussion) has one test to pass, but is expected to play in the team's preseason game against the New York Giants Sunday, Aug. 18, according to head coach Chuck Pagano.
TE | Fred Davis | Washington Redskins | Fantasy
Washington Redskins TE Fred Davis continues to look good this preseason, and head coach Mike Shanahan said he'll play roughly half of the preseason game Monday, Aug. 19.
Fantasy Tip: Davis is being undervalued as a second tight end for fantasy, probably because of his injury-prone label. If he stays healthy, he could be a nice surprise and solid red zone target for Robert Griffin III.
TE | Marcedes Lewis | Jacksonville Jaguars | Fantasy
The Jacksonville Jaguars are expected to use more two-tight end sets this season but have to find a reliable No. 2 tight end behind TE Marcedes Lewis. Lewis said he believes the formation will work well for the team if the offense is able to learn it. "Obviously, when you can run and pass out of a two-tight end set, it's awesome because they have to cover it both," Lewis said. "It's good for the tight ends because we want to be on the field. As long as we take what's being installed and digest it [during the preseason], it will create some match-up problems."
TE | Scott Chandler | Buffalo Bills | Injury, Fantasy
Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone said TE Scott Chandler (knee) will play in the team's second preseason game but will have specific number of snaps because he still coming back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. He was held out of the first preseason game as a precaution.
Fantasy Tip: Chandler likely will be the team's starting tight end this season if he is able to recover from his torn ACL. Chandler should be seen as a No. 2 fantasy tight end that likely will be available on the waiver wire when the season begins.
PK | Dan Carpenter | Free Agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
Free-agent PK Dan Carpenter (Dolphins) is expected to be picked up by a team soon, and the Green Bay Packers, Seattle Seahawks, Cleveland Browns, New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are some teams that might be interested.
Fantasy Tip: Carpenter's fantasy value will likely be minimal, depending on where he lands. He could be a waiver-wire play based on matchups down the road this season.
PK | Rian Lindell | Buffalo Bills | Fantasy
Buffalo Bills PKs Rian Lindell and Dustin Hopkins haven't separated themselves in the competition at place kicker this preseason. Each kicker attempted 12 field goals in practice Wednesday, Aug. 14; Lindell was 11-for-12 with a miss coming from 45 yards and Hopkins was 10-for-12 with his misses coming from 35 yards and 47 yards. Hopkins has great leg strength but is trying to fix his approach and follow through.
Fantasy Tip: Lindell is the favorite to win the job, but based on his performance thus far and the uncertainty surrounding the team's QB position, it wouldn't be wise to select him as your PK in your fantasy draft.
PK | Kai Forbath | Washington Redskins | Fantasy
Washington Redskins PK Kai Forbath made kicks from 32, 36, 40, 42, 44, 46, 48 and 58 yards in practice, with his only miss coming from 65 yards. PK John Potter didn't receive any action.
