We'll see," Berkman said of a return. He went on the 15-day disabled list due to inflammation in his left hip, and he has chronic soreness in his right knee.

"He wants to play and they won't let him play. Nobody knows Alex's body better than he does." Rodriguez's doctor, Dr. Michael Gross, said Rodriguez's MRI exam showed no damage to his quadriceps that should keep him from playing. The Yankees are exploring the possibility that Rodriguez is in violation of the league's collective bargaining agreement by seeking a second medical opinion and not notifying the team.

"He was cleared and good for the game, and once he took another one, he told me he had a little headache and that was it," manager Bob Melvin said. "You can't chance that."
