1B | Ryan Howard | Philadelphia Phillies | Injury, Fantasy
Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard (knee) underwent knee surgery Wednesday, July 10, and is expected to miss six to eight weeks.

1B | Albert Pujols | Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim | Injury, Fantasy
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim manager Mike Scioscia used 1B Albert Pujols (foot) at first base Tuesday, July 9, in a National League park against the Chicago Cubs, and was non-committal if Pujols would be back there again Wednesday, July 10. "We're going to play tonight and see what happens," Scioscia said.

Second Baseman

2B | Neil Walker | Pittsburgh Pirates | Injury, Transaction, Fantasy
The Pittsburgh Pirates placed 2B Neil Walker (side) on the 15-day disabled list with soreness in his right side Tuesday, July 9, and recalled 3B Josh Harrison from Triple-A Indianapolis in a corresponding move. Walker hadn't played since last Saturday, and he's unable to swing left-handed without pain. Harrison was hitting .317 with four home runs and 34 RBIs in 64 games.

2B | Kensuke Tanaka | San Francisco Giants | Fantasy
San Francisco Giants 2B Kensuke Tanaka, who played nine games in the outfield with Triple-A Fresno, is expected to be used some in the outfield, and he also might be asked to serve as the leadoff hitter to get the offense going. OF Jeff Francoeur will report to Fresno, but he could come up soon and be another option in left after the All-Star break. Tanaka hit .330 with a .392 on-base percentage at Fresno.

2B | Omar Infante | Detroit Tigers | Injury, Transaction, Fantasy
The Detroit Tigers placed 2B Omar Infante (shin, ankle) on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, July 9. The move is retroactive to July 4, and he can return after the All-Star break.

Shortstop

SS | Derek Jeter | New York Yankees | Injury, Fantasy
New York Yankees SS Derek Jeter (ankle) appears to be returning to action for the parent club this weekend against the Baltimore Orioles. The club shipped his equipment from Tampa Bay to New York instead of to Scranton, where he's played in three rehab games for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Manager Joe Girardi said that Jeter has to play in the field for a bit longer and on back-to-back days, which he's scheduled to do after receiving Tuesday, July 9 off.

SS | Troy Tulowitzki | Colorado Rockies | Injury, Fantasy
Colorado Rockies SS Troy Tulowitzki (rib) and OF Dexter Fowler (hand) could both be activated from the disabled list Thursday, July 11.

SS | Erick Aybar | Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim | Fantasy
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SS Erick Aybar said Tuesday, July 9, that 1B Albert Pujols has helped him calm his approach at the plate. Aybar said a few weeks ago, Pujols noticed Aybar was overanxious at the plate. He was diving at balls, torquing his body too aggressively and not letting pitches travel deep enough to slap them the other way like he normally does. "At the start, I was swinging too crazy," Aybar said. "Now I feel better because I'm more calm. I'm seeing pitches better." Pujols has also worked with 3B Alberto Callaspo in the same fashion.

Third Baseman

3B | Pedro Alvarez | Pittsburgh Pirates | Fantasy
Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Pedro Alvarez is starting to use the opposite field with authority, and his power to all fields is exceptional, according to GM Neal Huntington.

3B | Brett Lawrie | Toronto Blue Jays | Injury, Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Toronto Blue Jays 3B Brett Lawrie (ankle) could return to major league action this weekend against the Baltimore Orioles. Brendan Kennedy of The Toronto Star says that Lawrie's move to second base while on his rehab assignment has raised speculation that the organization will move him there once he's activated from the DL, perhaps allowing 1B/3B Edwin Encarnacion to move to third and OF Melky Cabrera to DH regularly. The experiment could suggest that GM Alex Anthopolous is positioning to make a trade for a third baseman.

3B | Chris D. Johnson | Atlanta Braves | Fantasy
Atlanta Braves 3B Chris D. Johnson said Tuesday, July 9, that he doesn't mind batting in the eighth spot of manager Fredi Gonzalez's order. "I don't mind at all, not one bit," Johnson said. "I would never tell the skipper what to do or to be asked to be moved up because the numbers say I deserve to be hitting higher. We've got a lot of good ballplayers on our team, and we're in firstp lace. If we were in last place, maybe you could start shuffling things around."

3B | Alex Rodriguez | New York Yankees | Injury, Fantasy
New York Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez (hip) went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts and a groundout for Single-A Tampa Tuesday, July 9, and he's now 1-for-11 with two strikeouts on his rehab assignment. He's likely to play again Wednesday, July 10.

C | Welington Castillo | Chicago Cubs | Injury, Fantasy
Chicago Cubs OF David DeJesus (shoulder) has been able to hit and throw in the cages recently, and he thinks he's headed in the right direction. "We're trying to find a swing that doesn't bother it but still not make a whole new swing out there," DeJesus said. "We have to find what works best." C Welington Castillo (illness) is feeling better after dealing with dehydration. OF Brian Bogusevic (hamstring) could return to the lineup Thursday, July 11.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Josh Hamilton made his first start of the season in left field Tuesday, July 9, against the Chicago Cubs, as OF Mark Trumbo moved to right field. "Mark is more comfortable in right field, and Josh kind of welcomes the adversity of (switching positions)," Scioscia said. "Most players really like playing one position, getting settled. Josh is fine bouncing around occasionally."

OF | Mike Trout | Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim | Fantasy
Los Angeles Angels OF Mike Trout will not take part in the Home Run Derby at Citi Field in New York Monday, July 15, and he said Tuesday, July 9, that he is fine with that. Trout said New York Yankees 2B Robinson Cano, serving as the American League captain for the second straight year, never asked him. Just a few days ago, manager Mike Scioscia strongly recommended Trout not take part. "He doesn't want me to do it because nothing good comes from it," Trout said.

OF | Chris Carter | Houston Astros | Injury, Fantasy
Houston Astros 1B Chris Carter (hand) is dealing with a minor hand injury, and it forced him to miss his third consecutive game Tuesday, July 9. He is available as a pinch hitter, and he went through a full batting practice session Tuesday.

OF | Manny Ramirez | Texas Rangers | Injury, Fantasy
The Texas Rangers don't plan on rushing OF Manny Ramirez to the majors while 1B Lance Berkman (hip) is sidelined. "I really don't know what to expect with Manny," general manager Jon Daniels said. "We don't have any set expectations. We're just going to let him play and evaluate it as it goes. Manny hasn't played at the big league level in a couple of years. We'll wait and see. We didn't sign him expecting him to be a knight in shining armor."

OF | Ryan Braun | Milwaukee Brewers | Fantasy

It is expected that Braun, along with New York Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez, will be suspended after the All-Star break.

OF | Adam Eaton | Arizona Diamondbacks | Injury, Transaction, Fantasy,
The Arizona Diamondbacks activated OF Adam Eaton (elbow) from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, July 9, and he's starting in center field and batting leadoff. In a corresponding move, P Charles Brewer was optioned to Triple-A Reno.

Starting Pitcher

SP | Jon Lester | Boston Red Sox | Fantasy
Boston Red Sox SP Jon Lester gave up a home run to Seattle Mariners OF Raul Ibanez in the fifth inning on Monday, July 8, on a cut fastball, a pitch similar to the one that 1B Justin Smoak hit for a double in the first inning of the same game. According to BrooksBasell.net, Lester's cutter has been considerably less effective this season, particularly when he has two strikes on a batter.

SP | Danny Hultzen | Seattle Mariners | Injury, Fantasy
Seattle Mariners SP Danny Hultzen (shoulder) will remain shut down for another 10 days as he continues to recover from irritation in his left shoulder, according to general manager Jack Zduriencik. The GM expects him to begin a throwing program sometime after that. Zduriencik also stated that the organization will look to make some adjustments to Hultzen's routine and mechanics. He expects the pitching prospect to pitch again this season.

SP | Mark Appel | Houston Astros | Fantasy
Houston Astros SP Mark Appel, the No. 1 overall pick in this year's First-Year Player Draft, has been promoted to Class A Quad Cities. He joins 2012 No. 1 overall pick SS Carlos Correa.

SP | Jake Peavy | Chicago White Sox | Injury, Fantasy
Chicago White Sox SP Jake Peavy (rib) threw a 76-pitch simulated game on Tuesday, July 9, at Comerica Park. He seems to feel that he's ready to be activated from the DL, but it seems likely that he'll make a rehab start for Double-A Birmingham on Sunday, July 14, instead. Manager Robin Ventura remarked that Peavy looked "free and easy" in the sim game. C Tyler Flowers gave an extensive review and stated that he felt Peavy "looked probably better than normal." It's unclear whether the right-handed pitcher will require more than one rehab start.

SP | Gerrit Cole | Pittsburgh Pirates | Injury, Fantasy
Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole's secondary stuff has been inconsistent, according to GM Neal Huntington.

SP | Ricky Romero | Toronto Blue Jays | Fantasy
Toronto Blue Jays SP Ricky Romero pitched seven innings for Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday, July 9, allowing two earned runs on six hits and two walks while fanning a season-high seven.

The Baltimore Orioles optioned SP Zach Britton and Kevin Gausman to Triple-A Norfolk Tuesday, July 9. The corresponding moves will be announced Wednesday, July 10, but SP Wei-Yin Chen (oblique) is coming off the 15-day disabled list to start Wednesday, so that is one of the moves.

SP | Brandon Morrow | Toronto Blue Jays | Injury, Fantasy,
Toronto Blue Jays SP Brandon Morrow (forearm) threw 25 pitches in a bullpen session at the team's minor-league facility in Dunedin, Fla. Tuesday, July 9, but it is still unclear when he'll be able to begin a minor-league rehab assignment. Morrow will need at least three rehab games before returning to the club.

SP | Jason Vargas | Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim | Injury, Fantasy,
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jason Vargas (arm pit) was scheduled to see the doctor who operated on his blood clot Tuesday, July 9. He is hopeful of starting to play catch Wednesday, July 10, exactly two weeks after surgery, which was the original plan.

SP | Bud Norris | Houston Astros | Fantasy,
Houston Astros manager Bo Porter said Tuesday, July 9, will likely be SP Bud Norris' last start before the All-Star break. He believes Norris is a candidate to be an alternate for the American League All-Star squad, and Porter is hoping to keep Norris fresh should the opportunity arise. "We feel like he's pitched well enough to be an All-Star," Porter said. "If it just so happened that he is selected as one of those reserves, we want him to be well-rested and be able to go in and pitch in the All-Star Game."

SP | Yovani Gallardo | Milwaukee Brewers | Fantasy,
The Texas Rangers might have some interest in Milwaukee Brewers SP Yovani Gallardo, but the latest scouting reports have not been good. Gallardo is 1-2 with a 6.75 ERA over his past four starts.

SP | Matt Garza | Chicago Cubs | Fantasy,
The Texas Rangers have scouted Chicago Cubs SP Matt Garza, and they have had interest in him in the past. The team is looking to upgrade its starting pitching, and they currently have four starters on the 15-day disabled list.

SP | Travis Wood | Chicago Cubs | Fantasy,
Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum said Tuesday, July 9, that despite the fact SP Travis Wood is scheduled to start Sunday, July 14, he might still get a chance to pitch in the All-Star Game July 16 at Citi Field in New York. "It will all depend on how Sunday goes," Sveum said. "(San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy) can use him for a left-handed hitter. It's going to be a side day anyway. I've got no problem with him pitching one inning, or 20 pitches. He goes all out on his side days anyways."

SP | Sonny Gray | Oakland Athletics | Fantasy,
Oakland Athletics SP Sonny Gray will be brought up from the minors but is likely to pitch out of the bullpen initially.

SP | Colby Lewis | Texas Rangers | Injury, Fantasy,
Texas Rangers SP Colby Lewis (triceps) threw a 35-pitch live batting practice session Tuesday, July 9, and didn't have any setbacks. He'll have another similar session Saturday, July 13. OF Craig Gentry (hand) took regular batting practice Tuesday.

SP | Dan Haren | Washington Nationals | Fantasy,
The Washington Nationals thought SP Dan Haren showed enough to warrant staying in the starting rotation as the trade deadline approaches in his first start back from the disabled list Monday, July 8, in which he allowed two runs in five innings to the Philadelphia Phillies. "I thought he threw the ball well," pitching coach Steve McCatty said. "The fastball seemed like it had a little more life on it. I didn't like the fact that he walked a run in, but he was willing to make a pitch instead of just saying in a big situation, 'I'm not going to walk you, here's a fastball to hit.' I liked his mindset. I thought he threw the ball well. He threw some real good splitters, I thought. I thought he did well."

Haren tinkered with a new grip on his splitter when he was on the disabled list, holding his middle and index fingers wider apart to make the pitch slower. McCatty wants Haren to be a little less aggressive in attacking hitters, and he also wants the discrepancy to be greater between Haren's fastball and splitter. Haren's splitter had more life in his start last night, and the Phillies swung and missed at 15 of his 95 pitches, which is tied for his season high.

SP | Brett Anderson | Oakland Athletics | Injury, Fantasy,
Oakland Athletics SP Brett Anderson (foot) is set to throw from 105 feet Tuesday, July 9, but there is still no timetable for when he'll resume throwing bullpen sessions.

Relief Pitcher

RP | Andrew Bailey | Boston Red Sox | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Boston Red Sox RP Andrew Bailey was an option to close on Sunday, July 7, manager John Farrell said. Bailey is the first reliever Farrell mentioned when asked who would be available to fill in for RP Koji Uehara, whom Farrell wanted to avoid using in that contest if possible. Farrell elaborated, saying that he'd like to get the game to RP Junichi Tazawa and Bailey late. Bailey recorded more than three outs in a game this season for the first time on Saturday, July 6, and he's improving. When asked if he'd like to see Uehara back in a setup role, Farrell responded, "Koji in the eighth or the ninth, depending on who else is available to close out games."

RP | Joe Nathan | Texas Rangers | Fantasy,
Texas Rangers RP Joe Nathan picked up his 30th save Monday, July 8. It is the eighth time in his career he has saved at least 30 games in a season in his career. Only eight other relievers have had at least eight 30-save seasons.
