2013 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Margus Hunt, DE, SMU

by Cory J. Bonini on April 15, 2013 @ 16:00:54 PDT

Southern Methodist University defensive end Margus Hunt came to America from Estonia and had a late start to his football career, but that hasn't stopped him from being in consideration for a high placement in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Hunt produced 31 tackles (11.5 for loss) and 8.0 sacks as a senior in 2012, his first year as a full-time starter.

Margus Hunt, DE, SMU
So little experience, so much upside

  • Rare and elite size-speed combination: huge frame at 6-foot-8, 277 pounds and unbelievable straight-line speed (4.53-second 40-yard dash)
  • Athletic freak of nature - 34 1/2-inch vertical jump, 38 bench press reps and 10-foot-1 broad jump
  • System versatile but has the makings of a stud 3-4 defensive end
  • Huge wingspan (33 3/4-inch arms and 10-inch hands)
  • Insane level of upside - just scratching the surface after starting his football career in 2009
  • Tremendous asset in the special teams game - 17 blocked kicks at SMU
  • Plays disciplined football on the edge in containment

  • Inconsistent pass rush technique and effectiveness
  • Play recognition and locating the ball are a problem - largely due to his inexperience
  • Will take some time before he is able to reach his full potential in the NFL
  • Has trouble getting low enough out of his stance to maintain leverage and shed blockers with consistency
  • Lacks a repertoire of pass-rushing moves
  • Will be 25 years old during the 2013 season

Expected draft placement

Hunt's upside is what will have teams talking about him in the late stages of Round 1. He could go to the San Francisco 49ers (No. 31), and it is tough to imagine that he will fall out of the second round. Look for the Philadelphia Eagles (No. 35) to consider Hunt if he is available.
