2013 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Le'Veon Bell, RB, Michigan State

by Cory J. Bonini on April 12, 2013 @ 17:44:55 PDT

Michigan State running back Le'Veon Bell offers a bruising style of play to the 2013 NFL Draft.

The 2012 season, Bell's only full-time campaign as a starter, resulted in 1,793 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns. He added 32 receptions and a score through the air. Bell, a junior, had 34 offensive scores to his credit in three years with the Spartans.

Le'Veon Bell, RB, Michigan State
A mixed bag

  • Strong build (6-foot-2, 230 pounds) with a thick lower body
  • Deceivingly good footwork for his size
  • Powerful initial pop
  • Competent picking up a blitz, largely due to his size
  • Productive with a nose for the end zone
  • Pretty good receiver
  • Can really stick a foot and get out of a cut
  • Effective spin move

  • Suspect vision to find cutback lanes
  • Was not a fumbler in college but can be carefree carrying the ball
  • Can struggle to get low because of his height
  • Lacks breakaway speed (4.54-second 40) and big-play ability
  • Can be impatient and hesitant as a runner - sometimes he is running down his blocker and others he is too slow to pick a hole
  • Questionable stamina
  • Below-average instincts

Expected draft placement

Bell could sneak into the late second round (Denver Broncos, Green Bay Packers) or fall into the early fourth, depending on how the draft shakes out because of the lack of need for the position right now.
