His day was cut short due to a 43-minute rain delay. He wanted to return, but manager Buck Showalter did not want to risk it. McCarthy threw plenty of strikes in both of his starts this year, but he hasn't been mixing up his speeds on all of his different pitches enough. "We just have to change the speeds, get some more offspeed pitching there, expand the zone with two strikes. It's just that we didn't want to impede his progress as a starter."

SP | Roy Halladay | Philadelphia Phillies | Fantasy,
Philadelphia Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. thinks SP Roy Halladay needs to be more aggressive within the strike zone after his velocity has dipped below 90 mph for the first time in his career. Halladay has thrown first-pitch strikes to only 11 of the 22 hitters he faced in his second start Monday, April 8. "That's probably the case. But ... if he gets back to being consistent in the strike zone and staying aggressive in the strike zone, he'll be successful," Amaro said. "He's still got pretty good movement on his stuff. He just doesn't have command. He gets behind hitters, and he has deep counts, and having to throw it over the plate at that point makes it easier for the hitters." Halladay's arm angle was also lower than it's been in the past, and he and pitching coach Rich Dubee have been working to fix it.

Texas Rangers SP Nick Tepesch allowed only one run in 7 1/3 innings against the Tampa Bay Rays in his major league debut Tuesday, April 9, to become the first pitcher to give up four hits or less and a run or less in his major league debut in 7 1/3 innings on a date as early as April 9 since Wayne Simpson did so April 9, 1970. Relief Pitcher

RP | Joaquin Benoit | Detroit Tigers | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland said RP Joaquin Benoit will be his primary closer option. "On a lot of the days, if it's doable, I think Benoit is the most experienced and versatile enough against righties and lefties to pitch the ninth," Leyland said. "But it's not going to be doable every day. You're liable to see anybody at any time... until something else happens, if it does happen." Leyland said it's "very unlikely" Benoit would close three consecutive days. Also, Leyland said he would like to avoid pitching Benoit in more than one inning.

Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost feels struggling RP Greg Holland might be back on track. "He figured something out last night, I think," Yost said Wednesday, April 10. He thinks Yost's approach was wrong, and that he was just trying to place his fastball for strikes instead of aggressively using his full assortment of pitches.
