2013 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Andre Ellington, RB, Clemson

by Cory J. Bonini on April 9, 2013 @ 13:04:39 PDT

Clemson running back Andre Ellington may be one of the older running backs (24) in this draft class, but he has enough talent to be a midround pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

As a senior, Ellington rushed for 1,081 yards and eight touchdowns in 2012. He managed 1,178 rushing yards and 11 ground scores the year before. In all, Ellington has racked up 35 offensive scores in four years at Clemson.

Andre Ellington, RB, Clemson
System limitations

Strengths

  • Elusive with quick, shifty moves - fluid hips
  • Big-play threat
  • Good vision and patience for finding the cutback lane
  • Understands how to compensate for his lack of size by lowering his shoulders and avoiding contact
  • Surprisingly competent blocker for his size
  • Instinctual, natural footwork - keeps a wide base but maintains his balance even from a narrower stance
  • Impressive acceleration and short-area burst
  • Confident, determined back - rarely lets his emotions get the best of him
  • Special teams return man experience

Weaknesses

  • Slightly undersized (5-foot-9, 199 pounds) - lacks functional strength for pushing the pile and fighting for extra yardage
  • Considerable injury risk
  • Fumbling issues throughout much of his time at Clemson
  • Average straight-line speed (4.54 seconds in the 40-yard dash)
  • Probably limited to a situational role in the NFL
  • Limited experience as a route runner (very basic routes)
  • Already 24 years old

Expected draft placement

Ellington is a good fit for zone-blocking systems but may be limited to a specific role in the NFL. His name should come off the board somewhere in the third round and no later than the end of the fourth.
