2013 NFL Draft Scouting Report: EJ Manuel, QB, Florida State

by Cory J. Bonini on April 8, 2013 @ 17:41:11 PDT

Florida State quarterback EJ Manuel is a two-year starter and his intangibles, coupled with his physical skills, should garner attention in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Manuel passed for 3,392 yards with 23 touchdowns to 10 interceptions in 2012. He completed 68.0 percent of his throws on the year. As a junior, the former Seminole threw 18 scoring strikes to eight picks. Manuel rushed for eight scores over the last two seasons.

EJ Manuel, QB, Florida State
Impressive intangibles

Strengths

  • Great intangibles - team leader, hard worker, strong character
  • Excellent size (6-foot-5, 237 pounds) with long arms (35 inches) and huge hands (10 3/8 inches)
  • Enough mobility to be dangerous
  • Impressively quick release - very compact throwing motion, especially for underneath routes
  • Strong arm - can make all of the throws in the pro game
  • Mentally strong - played through his mother battling cancer in 2011
  • Tough - played a bowl game on a fractured leg
  • Ample upside

Weaknesses

  • Forces too many balls
  • Doesn't have great touch or accuracy for throws into tight spaces
  • Often fails to lead receivers enough to give them room to work after the catch
  • Inconsistent, if not poor, footwork
  • Seems to rattle rather easily under pressure
  • Could use more experience from under center

Expected draft placement

Manuel is somewhat a project quarterback, and he could struggle initially making the jump to the NFL. Look for a team to believe in him enough to spend a second-round selection on him, and he likely will not fall out of the third round.
