He's not staying on top." But that has nothing to do with his wrist injury from last year. He's started out 0-for-8 with two strikeouts.

Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum commented on his willingness to stick with RP Carlos Marmol as the team's closer after two shaky outings to begin this season. "I went with it three months last year and he got out of all (the jams)," Sveum, said. "It wasn't like he was pitch efficient last year when he was getting out of all of them." Sveum had already used his three setup men before the ninth Thursday, April 4, but he noted that Marmol didn't throw bad in the outing. RP Hisanori Takahashi was warming up when Marmol was teetering. "I was leaving (Marmol) in until he gave it up," Sveum said.

Detroit Tigers RP Jose Valverde threw for one of the club's scouts in the Dominican Republic Saturday, March 30, and per general manager Dave Dombrowski, reports said Valverde's velocity was solid, touching the mid-90s. Valverde also threw some split-finger fastballs for the observer, which was a positive sign because he rarely used the pitch last year.

RP Mike Gonzalez has closed games in the past, but he's still trying to gain the trust of manager Ron Roenicke. RP Alfredo Figaro is a former starter who is transition to the role of relief pitcher. Axford has another bad outing Wednesday, April 3, and his fastball velocity was 91-92 mph, when he can normally hit 97 mph.

Free-agent RP Francisco Cordero (shoulder) will have surgery on his non-throwing shoulder this month to fix an old injury. He will play winter ball and is hoping to return next season.

The Chicago White Sox signed free-agent RP Jason Berken (Cubs) to a minor league deal Thursday, April 4, and assigned him to Triple-A Charlotte.

Tampa Bay Rays RP Fernando Rodney blew a save chance against the Baltimore Orioles Wednesday, April 3, for the first time in 20 outings dating back to last year. However, he was credited with the win in the game. He also brought a scoreless streak of 19 innings over 19 outings into the season, which was snapped.

Cincinnati Reds RP Sean Marshall (shoulder) hasn't been available in the team's first three games because he is dealing with left shoulder fatigue. "Spring training was so long. I think I peaked a little early," Marshall said. "I was getting a little bit of fatigue in my shoulder. It's just precautionary. They have me doing some therapy and getting it strong again. I'm probably a day or two away. I'll probably be ready by Friday night's game." He last pitched in a game in spring training March 22, but he's in no danger of landing on the disabled list.
