2013 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Alex Okafor, DE, Texas

by Cory J. Bonini on April 4, 2013 @ 15:56:18 PDT

Texas defensive end Alex Okafor is coming off a strong senior season and should be a fairly high pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

In 2010, he played defensive tackle, which wasn't the best move for his stat line. He made only 30 tackles on the year. As a junior, Okafor went back to defensive end and finished with promising numbers (7.0 sacks, 12.5 tackles for loss). As mentioned, his senior effort was very good: 54 stops (16.5 for loss) and 12.5 sacks. However, 4.5 of those sacks came in one game.

Lacks that "wow" factor

Strengths

  • On-field leadership skills
  • Non-stop motor - plays with hustle and gives 100 percent at all times
  • Fundamental tackler
  • Sound, efficient footwork
  • Strong, if not violent, hands
  • Displays an effective swim move
  • Well-rounded enough to rush the passer and cover the run - isn't exceptional at either, however
  • Has enough frame to add considerable bulk (currently 6-foot-5, 264 pounds)
  • Long arms (33 7/8 inches)
  • Played defensive tackle in 2010 - added position versatility and experience

Weaknesses

  • Not much of a natural pass rusher - more of a secondary, supplemental end
  • Lacks ideal size to play left defensive end in a 4-3 but isn't fast enough to play 4-3 left end
  • Doesn't appear to be capable of playing 3-4 outside linebacker
  • Was charged with failure to obey a law enforcement officer in 2012, but the charges were dropped
  • Struggles shedding bigger linemen

Expected draft placement

Seemingly, Okafor is likely to go in the second round, where he is a fair value. The Atlanta Falcons could look to him with their 30th overall selection in the first round, though. Expect him to be limited to 4-3 teams that need a secondary option at the position.
