"Early it was dancing a ton," Arencibia said. "It was really darting every way possible. It made it tough." Arencibia didn't fare much better at the plate. He had a double in four at-bats, but also a pair of strikeouts. Manager John Gibbons said after the game he wouldn't hesitate to start Arencibia in the next start by Dickey. "I wouldn't see why not," Gibbons said.

Darvish is the first pitcher to lose a perfect game with two outs in the ninth since former Detroit Tigers P Armando Galarraga on June 2, 2010. He finished with 14 strikeouts, matching a Minute Maid Park record. Darvish was removed by manager Ron Washington after 8 2/3 innings and 111 pitches. He has yet to throw a complete game in the majors.

"I just thought that was enough for a first start."

San Diego Padres SP Tyson Ross won the No. 5 starter battle because he had a sound spring and the Padres want to ease Andrew Cashner into action via the bullpen. Early in camp, Ross worked with pitching coach Darren Balsley to change his stride during his delivery to help his pitches stay lower in the strike zone. At one point, Ross had a run of 15 1/3 scoreless innings in spring ball. The Padres probably will cap Cashner's innings this year at somewhere between 150 and 160.

The procedure was to fix a tear in the capsule in the front of his left shoulder, and he'll miss the entire season for the second time in the last three years. The Mets still owe Santana $31 million from his $137.5 million, six-year deal.


Relief Pitcher

Cleveland Indians RP Chris Perez (shoulder) was able to answer the bell when called upon for his first save chance of the season Tuesday, April 2, against the Toronto Blue Jays. He allowed a hit with one strikeout, throwing 12 of his 19 pitches for strikes, earning a save. Last season he blew a save, allowing three runs in the ninth inning at home against the Toronto Blue Jays on Opening Day.

Toronto Blue Jays RP Sergio Santos is looking forward to the new season after struggling in his first year with inconsistency and injuries. "It feel likes a whole new experience for me, a whole new Opening Day," Santos said Tuesday, April 2. "I'm really looking forward to closing the chapter on last year and really looking to moving onto this year. I'm excited, I'm healthy."

Atlanta Braves general manager Frank Wren said the team is hopeful that RP Jonny Venters (elbow) is only dealing with inflammation in his left elbow after his MRI exam was inconclusive. The team has no timetable for his return from the 15-day disabled list. "We're just optimistic that the four weeks will get it calmed down and get him back throwing," Wren said. Dr. James Andrews did other tests on Venters that has them optimistic that he won't need another Tommy John surgery.
