by Cory J. Bonini on April 2, 2013 @ 14:32:31 PDT

Ohio State defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins was a two-year starter for the Buckeyes and left prior to his senior season for the 2013 NFL Draft.

Hankins notched 55 tackles and a sack in 2012 after racking up 68 stops the prior year. He finished his sophomore season with 3.0 sacks.

Johnathan Hankins, DT, Ohio State
Amazing positional versatility

  • Stout build at 6-foot-3, 320 pounds, with long arms (33 inches)
  • Surprisingly agile for his size
  • Versatile - can play 3-4 nose tackle and end, as well as 4-3 defensive tackle
  • Experienced and durable - 25 straight starts
  • Good initial punch
  • Lateral agility and moves well in space
  • Experienced dropping into coverage
  • Instinctual with plenty of awareness, especially versus the run
  • Consistently sets the edge and controls the point of attack

  • Conditioning concerns - visibly wears down as the game goes on - was used on almost every down in 2012 and should be limited in the pros
  • Inconsistent use of leverage
  • Played through a nagging knee sprain the past two years
  • Needs to improve his technique, especially when he wears down - tends to rely too much on his upper-body strength
  • Has experienced massive weight fluctuations that need to be controlled

Expected draft placement

Hankins has late first-day potential and should come off the board no later than the middle of the second round. The Indianapolis Colts (No. 24), Green Bay Packers (No. 26) and Denver Broncos (No. 28) should be in the mix for his services.
