by Cory J. Bonini on March 29, 2013 @ 14:25:10 PDT

Florida International strong safety Jonathan Cyprien may come from a small school, but he brings a great deal of potential to the 2013 NFL Draft.

Cyprien racked up 93 stops as a senior in 2012, and he contributed 3.5 sacks. He recorded 194 total tackles over his sophomore and junior seasons at FIU.

Strengths

  • Good ball skills
  • Solid build at 6-foot, 217 pounds
  • Big hands (10 1/4 inches)
  • Big hitter
  • Effective blitzer
  • Active versus the run - plays at his best in the box
  • Extremely passionate about the game
  • Vocal team leader
  • Considerable upside
  • While he is at his best against the run, Cyprien has shown playmaking ability in zone defense versus crossing receivers

Weaknesses

  • Lacks elite range - probably not cut out for playing single high safety in the NFL
  • Raw - could take some time to develop
  • Awareness is just OK - needs to improve his read-and-react skills
  • Too aggressive in pass coverage at times - bites a lot on play-action passing
  • Just average straight-line speed (4.64 seconds in the 40-yard dash)
  • Needs to hit lower on the ball carrier
  • Played against lesser competition in college

Expected draft placement

The NFL will be getting a raw but promising prospect with Cyprien. He has the skill set and upside to go as high as the late first round, although a solid second-round placement is more realistic. The St. Louis Rams (No. 16, No. 22) and Atlanta Falcons (No. 30) could look at him in the first round.
