Updating an earlier report, the Arizona Diamondbacks have agreed with 1B Paul Goldschmidt on a five-year, $32 million deal with a $14.5 million club option for 2019. It buys out all his arbitration years and at least one free-agent year.

Minnesota Twins 1B Justin Morneau (back) was scratched from the lineup with mild back tightness Thursday, March 28.

1B | Mauro Gomez | Boston Red Sox | Transaction
The Boston Red Sox optioned 1B Mauro Gomez to Triple-A Pawtucket Thursday, March 28.

1B | Lyle Overbay | New York Yankees | Fantasy
New York Yankees 1B Lyle Overbay will start the year as the team's starting first baseman, and OF Ben Francisco will be the fourth outfielder.

1B | Logan Morrison | Miami Marlins | Injury, Fantasy
Miami Marlins 1B Logan Morrison (knee) is hoping to return to the team in early to mid-May. The club could choose to put him on the 60-day disabled list, though, if they feel he'll be ready closer to June, which would open a spot on the 40-man roster. Morrison will start running on the field and taking ground balls next week, and he's been going at 90 percent intensity on an anti-gravity treadmill. He has also taken swings in the cages but has yet to take batting practice. Morrison will begin the year playing games in extended spring training.


Second Baseman

San Diego Padres 2B Alexi Amarista will get the start at second base when the team faces a right-handed pitcher in the second game of the year April 3. 2B Jedd Gyorko will shift to third base.

2B | Logan Forsythe | San Diego Padres | Injury, Fantasy
San Diego Padres manager Bud Black announced Thursday, March 28, that 2B Logan Forsythe (foot) will be out at least six weeks with plantar fasciitis in his foot. He will be in a boot for the next three weeks.


Shortstop

Cleveland Indians SS Asdrubal Cabrera (back) is very optimistic that he will be ready for opening day. He has missed the last six spring games with his back ailment. Cabrera could serve as the designated hitter in a minor league game Friday, March 29. "He's doing well," manager Terry Francona said. "He's definitely on pace for opening day. We're just trying to figure out the best way for him to feel more comfortable at the plate."


Third Baseman

Boston Red Sox OFs Ryan Sweeney, Daniel Nava, Mike Carp and Jackie Bradley are basically fighting for the last two roster spots. Sweeney can opt out of his contract if he doesn't make the roster. Manager John Farrell wouldn't indicate how good of a chance Bradley has at making the team.

Baltimore Orioles OF Nick Markakis (neck) will hit leadoff every inning for State College in an exhibition game Friday, March 29.

Houston Astros OF Fernando Martinez (oblique) was scratched from the lineup Thursday, March 28, and he could start the season on the disabled list. His back tightened up earlier in camp, and he'll head to Houston to be looked at by a doctor Friday, March 29. Martinez said he thinks it's his left oblique muscle.

OF | Chris Dickerson | Baltimore Orioles | Injury
Baltimore Orioles OF Chris Dickerson (Achilles') had his ankle heavily taped Thursday, March 28, but he's confident he'll be ready for opening day. He didn't undergo X-rays. OF Trayvon Robinson (back) remains day-to-day with tightness in his lower back that returned during batting practice Wednesday, March 27. Dickerson and Robinson could be sent to Triple-A Norfolk.

OF | Chris Coghlan | Miami Marlins | Fantasy
Miami Marlins OF Chris Coghlan entered the final day of camp hitting .311 with a home run and 17 RBIs in 19 spring games. "He has been great," manager Mike Redmond said. "He is making the most of his opportunity. (Tuesday) it was just kind of a topper for him to get that pinch-hit home run. A nice swing off the bench." OF Gorkys Hernandez is competing with Coghlan for a roster spot, but the team may be trying to trade Hernandez. Coghlan has one minor league option left and Hernandez is out of options.

"Stuff-wise, I think location and movement I'm just a click behind where I want to be."

"They said he was just blowing guys away," Francona said. "Most of the time when a guy goes to a back field, you'll see a velocity dip a little bit. Nobody's in the stands. His (velocity) spiked up. It's interesting. We're trying to get a handle on why that is. ... Maybe it's like he gets in a comfort zone, he's loose and he lets it fly. The good news is it's there. Now, you want to see it more consistently." Carrasco is still making his way back from Tommy John surgery.

Relief Pitcher

"I don't think he needs to master the changeup; I think that's too much for a kid. Right now, for development purposes, just put the changeup on the back burner and get the command of the fastball and the breaking ball," Leyland said. The team could recall Rondon at any moment this year.

RP | Phil Coke | Detroit Tigers | Fantasy,
Detroit Tigers RPs Phil Coke, Joaquin Benoit and Octavio Dotel figure to see the bulk of save chances with manager Jim Leyland using a closer-by-committee setup to begin the season. RP Bruce Rondon will serve as the closer at Triple-A Toledo in order to try and find consistency. Rondon made a mechanical tweak this spring that seemed to help out, but the team wants him to work on it some more in the minors. General manager Dave Dombrowski didn't rule out the team bringing Rondon up quickly, but they aren't putting a time frame on it.
