2013 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Kawann Short, DT, Purdue

by Cory J. Bonini on March 27, 2013 @ 17:39:02 PDT

Purdue defensive lineman Kawann Short plays all across the defensive line but is most comfortable at tackle, which is where he will probably be chosen in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Short posted 47 tackles, 14.5 for loss, and a half-dozen sacks in 2012. He has 18.5 total quarterback takedowns in the past three years.

Kawann Short, DT, Purdue
Two-gapper with beastly potential

  • Stout build (6-foot-3, 299 pounds) with long arms (34 3/4 inches) for his height
  • A lot of lower-body strength
  • Can be extremely tough to deal with when his technique is fundamentally sound
  • At his best playing interior in a two-gap scheme
  • Shows awareness in the short-passing game to sniff out slip blocks as a screen sets up
  • Experience playing all along the line
  • Has a knack for beating double-teams
  • Strong, punishing hands
  • Two-year team captain and has plenty of experience as a starter

  • Doesn't always fire out - stands up too often
  • Needs to play more consistently and use better technique to gain leverage
  • Questionable effort - tends to give up on plays that he is taken out of
  • Lacks ideal short-area burst to close on the ball carrier
  • Struggles to regularly identify misdirection plays

Expected draft placement

Short has a chance to sneak into the late first round. He could go as early as No. 18 to the Dallas Cowboys, who are in need of interior help as they transition to a 4-3 alignment. The Denver Broncos (No. 26) also need defensive tackle help. Short could be a luxury pick for the New England Patriots (No. 29) if they want to upgrade their pass rush.
