2013 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Eric Reid, FS, LSU

by Cory J. Bonini on March 25, 2013 @ 14:40:38 PDT

LSU free safety Eric Reid chose the 2013 NFL Draft route after his junior season with the Tigers, and he has a chance at being a first-round selection in April.

Reid racked up 91 tackles in 2012 and 76 as a sophomore. He has four interceptions, 10 pass breakups and two forced fumbles in the last two seasons.

Eric Reid, FS, LSU
Fiery competitor

  • Extremely athletic with lower-body explosiveness (11-foot-2 broad jump, 40 1/2-inch vertical)
  • Rangy defender with big wingspan (33 5/8-inch arms, 10-inch hands)
  • Good speed (4.53-second 40-yard dash) and size combination (6-foot-1, 213 pounds)
  • Violent hitter and aggressive around the line of scrimmage
  • Very capable defender in jump-ball situations
  • Diagnoses plays in a hurry
  • Generally a sound tackler in the open field - can cut players down as well as wrap up
  • Above-average instincts
  • Hard worker with no off-the-field issues

  • Overly aggressive - tries to jump too many routes and misses tackles on cutback runs
  • Average recovery speed
  • Reckless style of play opens him up to greater injury potential
  • Lacked some of his signature playmaking highlights without Morris Claiborne and Tyrann Mathieu shielding him
  • A little stiff in his hip sync against quicker receivers

Expected draft placement

Reid has an outside chance to slide into the first stanza of the draft, but he safely comes with a second-round grade, which is likely when he will come off the board. It would be surprising to see him fall out of Round 3.
