2013 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Tyler Wilson, QB, Arkansas

by Cory J. Bonini on March 21, 2013 @ 18:01:22 PDT

Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson is one of the most exciting prospects in the 2013 NFL Draft. His gunslinger mentality makes him prone to mistakes as well as jaw-dropping big plays.

Wilson was a two-year starter for the Razorbacks. In 2011, as a junior, he completed 63.2 percent of his throws for 3,638 yards. Wilson connected on 24 scoring strikes to just six interceptions thrown. With high expectations as a senior, Wilson failed to live up to his billing, but much of it wasn't his fault (coaching change, loss of receivers to the NFL). He threw for 3,387 yards, 21 touchdowns and 13 picks in '12.

Rare intangibles

  • Played well in 2011 with appropriate talent around him
  • Goes through his progressions
  • Delivers a catchable ball within intermediate-range throws - leads receivers enough to gain yardage after the catch
  • Tight spiral with zip when throwing intermediate routes
  • Strong leadership skills and plays with a certain moxie that is not coachable
  • Stands tall in the pocket in the face of a heavy rush
  • Can take a hit with the best of them
  • Enough mobility within the pocket to elude the rush
  • Tremendous upside if coached and utilized properly

  • Lacks ideal size (6-foot-2, 215 pounds)
  • Small hands (8 3/4 inches)
  • Thinks his arm is stronger than it is when going downfield
  • Too much of a gambler - will get overly aggressive trying to make a play in a tight space
  • Struggled in 2012 with little supporting cast and having to deal with a head coaching change
  • A little bit of a windup in his throwing motion
  • Tends to hold the ball too long trying to make something happen (opens himself up to turnovers)
  • Inconsistent footwork and little experience dropping from under center

Expected draft placement

Wilson would be a great fit for the Buffalo Bills' new offense under Doug Marrone. It is a shotgun-based spread system with elements of a Sean Payton system. Buffalo could look Wilson's way early in the second round. The New York Jets, Arizona Cardinals and Houston Texans could all be in the mix in Round 2. He shouldn't fall beyond the third round.
