2013 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Kevin Minter, ILB, LSU

by Cory J. Bonini on March 12, 2013 @ 16:17:50 PDT

LSU inside linebacker Kevin Minter brings his intellectual style of defense to the 2013 NFL Draft.

The junior posted 130 tackles, an interception, 4.0 sacks and five pass breakups in his lone full season as a starter in 2012. Minter registered 61 stops in 2011, when he started 11 of 14 games.

Mind and motor

Strengths

  • Extremely consistent
  • Sure tackler, especially in the open field
  • Excels versus the run - understands the correct angles to take to the ball carrier
  • Heady defender - plays the quarterback, understands how to make up for his less-than-ideal athleticism
  • Three-down ability
  • Instinctual with read-and-react skills
  • Well-respected team leader (captain and team MVP in 2012)
  • Weaves through "trash" well and doesn't get caught up easily - spins, swims and slashes his way through traffic
  • Good motor
  • Productive versus elite competition

Weaknesses

  • Lacks overall athleticism and elite lateral quickness
  • Struggles shedding latch-on blockers
  • Played on an excellent defense that may have made him look better than he is
  • A tad undersized (6-foot, 246 pounds)
  • Can get caught off-guard on play fakes
  • Lacks range in pass coverage

Expected draft placement

Several teams in the late first round could have interest in Minter. He is a bit of an overachiever, but franchises looking for a smart, team-first player have done their homework on the former Tiger.

Minter could land with the Houston Texans (No. 27) or Baltimore Ravens (No. 32) in the first round. He might not make it past the New York Jets in the early second round.
