2013 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Sio Moore, OLB, Connecticut

by Cory J. Bonini on March 5, 2013 @ 18:16:35 PDT

Connecticut outside linebacker Sio Moore is an athletic beast and is climbing boards before the 2013 NFL Draft.

Moore, a senior, logged 72 stops (15.5 for loss), 11 pass breakups and 7.5 sacks in 2012. He has 274 career tackles to his credit, primarily fueled by a 110-tackle effort in 2010.

Sio Moore, OLB, Connecticut

Strengths

  • Extremely athletic - great lower-body explosion (38-inch vertical jump, 10-foot-7 broad jump)
  • Quick first step and impressive straight-line speed (4.65-second 40-yard dash)
  • High-level read-and-react skills
  • Very competitive - non-stop hustle
  • Explosive tackler at times but much better at wrapping up the ball carrier
  • Respectable in coverage versus tight ends and running backs
  • Disciplined defender - maintains assignments
  • Productive versatility - similarly as good versus the run and pass

Weaknesses

  • Could improve his closing speed
  • Short-area game can be a detriment against faster running backs
  • Needs to improve his hand fighting to help shed bigger blockers
  • Limited upside - probably will never be better than above-average in the NFL

Expected draft placement

Moore wowed at the NFL Scouting Combine and has plenty of experience under his belt. He could go as high as the middle of the second round but is more likely a third-rounder. His game translates best to 4-3 defenses, although Moore could develop as a capable 3-4 alignment 'backer in time.
