2013 NFL Draft Scouting Report: DeAndre Hopkins, WR, Clemson

by Cory J. Bonini on March 5, 2013 @ 18:16:34 PDT

Clemson wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins declared for the 2013 NFL Draft following his junior year and generally ranks among the top players at his position.

Hopkins caught 72 balls for 978 yards and five scores in 2011, but that paled in caparison to his gaudy 2012 line of 82-1,405-18. He has 27 career touchdown grabs in three seasons at Clemson.

DeAndre Hopkins, WR, Clemson

  • Good size (6-foot-1, 214 pounds)
  • Big hands (10 inches) and large wingspan (33 3/8-inch arms)
  • Working hard at becoming a hands catcher - has shown serious improvement in this area
  • Red zone target - large radius and great leaping ability (38-inch vertical)
  • Dangerous with the ball in his hands - lateral agility and above-average short-area burst to gain separation
  • Good ball security
  • Precise route runner - understands body fakes and nuances to gain separation
  • Team leader - well-respected teammate
  • Seems to rise to the occasion
  • Moderate upside - still developing his craft

  • Despite showing improvement, he's not a natural hands catcher
  • Limited experience in the route tree because of the offense
  • Can become overly aggressive as a blocker and lose his cool
  • Average straight-line speed (4.57 seconds in the 40-yard dash)
  • Concentration lapses - sometimes turns upfield without the football

Expected draft placement

Hopkins is likely a second-round pick in April's draft. His style could be attractive to the Indianapolis Colts, Minnesota Vikings, Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers and Houston Texans.
