Tampa Bay Rays 1B James Loney, who is suffering from allergies, was sent home Monday, March 4, to rest since he was not scheduled to play against the Boston Red Sox. Maddon said he expects Loney to make his start Tuesday, March 5, against the Minnesota Twins.

1B | Allen Craig | St. Louis Cardinals | Fantasy
The St. Louis Cardinals are close to deals that would renew all players' contracts under club control, but the team is taking a little extra time determining a salary for OF Allen Craig. The team uses the minimum salary of $490,000 and tacks on incentives based on production. An announcement is expected later this week.

Chicago White Sox 1B Keon Barnum (hand) underwent surgery to remove the hamate bone in his right hand Monday, March 4, and he's expected to miss six weeks.

1B | Joey Votto | Cincinnati Reds | Injury, Fantasy
Cincinnati Reds 1B Joey Votto (knee) will play for Team Canada in the World Baseball Classic. Votto said he is ready to go. "I was very clear to everyone that I needed the games to make sure my knee was healthy and heading in the right direction," said Votto. "I feel confident in it and confident in my commitment. I feel I can comfortably play. I've never been hurt before, and I wanted a little more of a grace period before the tournament to make sure I'm ready for my primary commitment to the Cincinnati Reds." Votto and Minnesota Twins 1B Justin Morneau are expected to split first base and designated hitter duties.

Second Baseman

The team isn't second guessing the decision to avoid surgery on Furcal's elbow at the end of last year.

St. Louis Cardinals 3B David Freese (undisclosed) was removed from the game early for precautionary reasons Monday, March 4, after he fell into the stands trying to catch a fly ball.

Texas Rangers 3B Adrian Beltre (calf) still plans on representing the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic if the team advances to the second round. Updating previous items, Philadelphia Phillies OF Delmon Young (ankle) is scheduled to see a Los Angeles doctor on the status of his rehabbing right ankle. Young had microfracture surgery in November and hasn't participated in practices, let alone games, since arriving in camp over two weeks ago. Assistant general manager Scott Proefrock said it wouldn't be fair to place a timetable on when Young could get on the field this spring until Young gets evaluated. "It really depends on what the doctor says and how he progresses once he is cleared for baseball activities," Proefrock said. "To guess, it would just be a pure guess."

"We amped up the intensity a bit and doubled the throws,'' Hughes said following a 50-toss outing on flat ground at 60 feet at George M. Steinbrenner Field. "I didn't feel anything. I felt like I lost a tick of arm strength. Hopefully that comes back quick, it's only been two weeks. Hopefully I get that back and go from there.''

Rzepczynski described his discomfort as "fatigue" and "mild irritation." He was able to throw 120 feet without pain or difficulty Monday, March 4, and he could return to the mound this week.

The Detroit Tigers have benched RP Bruce Rondon so he can work on mechanics and improve his control before his next exhibition assignment. Rondon was groomed by management to close games this spring but appears to be out of that role. No firm replacement was named, although manager Jim Leyland ruled out a return of CL Jose Valverde to the role.
