"I never had my hand slip off the bat like that. The bottom hand. Usually it's the top hand that slips off. It was painful, because I couldn't rest it. The vibration would keep hitting (the thumb) every time I hit. It's a good feeling when you can just worry about having a good at-bat rather than thinking if I get jammed, it's going to be the worst pain. It's nice."

2B | Robinson Cano | New York Yankees | Fantasy
New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said 3B Alex Rodriguez's 10-year contract will not affect the team's plans to sign 2B Robinson Cano to a long-term extension. "There's only so much you can spend, but we'll look at Robbie as an individual, not as it relates to whatever we're doing with Alex Rodriguez and our commitment and the regression we have experienced with Alex," Cashman said.

Despite hitting a home run in the spring game Monday, Feb. 25, Seattle Mariners OF Jason Bay faces long odds to make the team's roster. "I've kind of refound it," Bay said. "I've struggled for a while. I tried a million things trying to save face. Nothing was working, and I got so far away from doing what I had done before that I forgot how to do it." Being healthy this offseason has allowed Bay to try to search for his old approach. Bay could be in competition for a spot with OF Casper Wells, and Wells has an advantage because he plays all three outfield positions well.

OF | Andres Torres | San Francisco Giants | Injury, Fantasy
San Francisco Giants OF Andres Torres (oblique) is dealing with a sore oblique that has limited him to hitting from the right side, but he's expected to play Tuesday, Feb. 26.

Oakland Athletics OF Chris B. Young (quadriceps) left the spring game with cramps in his quadriceps Sunday, Feb. 24, only as a precaution, according to manager Bob Melvin. Young isn't scheduled to play Monday, Feb. 25, but should be fine for Tuesday, Feb. 25.

OF | Alfonso Soriano | Chicago Cubs | Injury, Fantasy
Chicago Cubs OF Alfonso Soriano said he'd be open to the possibility of a trade to the New York Yankees. "I don't know if it happened today (if I would go)," Soriano said. "I don't know (if) they are going to call or not. If they call for me, I would have to think about it. I am 37 years old so I have to think about what is good for me and the (Cubs)." Soriano has full no-trade rights because he is a 10-and-5 player. However, the Yankees have few resources to offer the Cubs in terms of minor league pitching talent. OF Curtis Granderson (forearm) could be back by early May, which may convince the Yankees to sit tight.

OF | Brett Jackson | Chicago Cubs | Fantasy

Jackson also worked on other ways to shorten his swing after he hit just .116 with one extra-base hit in his last 20 games last season. "So far, so good," Sveum said. "It's (only about) five at-bats, and he has centered the ball. The first one he hit to center field (Saturday) was a great swing. That's about as quick as you can get a bat through the strike zone." Jackson will begin in the minors this year and will have to prove he has shortened his swing to avoid large amounts of strikeouts.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Vernon Wells plans to retire when his seven-year deal comes to an end after the 2014 season, even though he'll be only 35 years old. "My kids," Wells said. OFs Zoilo Almonte, Melky Mesa and Adonis Garcia could also figure into the mix. INF Eduardo Nunez will not be used in the outfield, according to general manager Brian Cashman. The injury to Granderson likely cements OF Brett Gardner as the starting center fielder.

OF | Nolan Reimold | Baltimore Orioles | Injury, Fantasy
Baltimore Orioles OF Nolan Reimold (neck) said he will need some more at-bats to get comfortable in the batter's box again after missing most of the 2012 season. "Last year, I felt like I was a little bit herky jerky," Richards said. "Now, I just feel like I'm free and easy. I'm throwing the ball about 80 percent and I don't feel like I'm losing any velocity or any sharpness on my ball. I feel really good right now." He allowed an unearned run while giving up two hits, walking none and strikeout out one in two innings Monday, Feb. 25.

SP | Brian Matusz | Baltimore Orioles | Fantasy,

San Francisco Giants SP Madison Bumgarner worked hard on correcting his mechanics in the offseason, and he looked much tighter in his spring outing Monday, Feb. 25. He isn't throwing across his body as much as he was last season, and by doing so he thinks he'll be better able to spot his fastball in the zone. Bumgarner has other things he wants to work on, too. "I want to control the running game more," Bumgarner said. "Last year, my time to the plate was so slow. It didn't matter if I slide-stepped or not. I didn't give Buster a shot. So I'll work on that." He had the most stolen bases against of any other left-handed pitcher last year, as opponents were successful in 27 of their 37 attempts against him.

SP | Ian Kennedy | Arizona Diamondbacks | Fantasy,

SP | Martin Perez | Texas Rangers | Fantasy,
Texas Rangers SP Martin Perez has impressed manager Ron Washington so far this spring as he attempts to crack the starting rotation. "He's shown good focus," Washington said. "He's showing a good changeup, a good breaking ball and is keeping his fastball down with good movement around both sides of the plate. Now, can he do that when a hitter walks up there? That is what is going to separate him."

SP | John Danks | Chicago White Sox | Injury, Fantasy,
Chicago White Sox SP John Danks (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Tuesday, Feb. 26, and RP Matt Thornton (elbow) will throw a bullpen Wednesday, Feb. 27.

SP | Matt Garza | Chicago Cubs | Injury, Fantasy,

"My leg has a little bit further to come, but it's getting there." Boston Red Sox RP Daniel Bard walked and hit a batter but tossed a scoreless inning in his first spring training outing Monday, Feb. 25, and he was clocked at 94 mph. "It's a small thing, but it takes a lot of reps to get it right. I had some bad habits built up from last year and corrected most of them. That's the one we're still working on. I feel good. I feel like I can finally trust myself with throwing the ball where I want to and just attacking guys." He expects to add another couple miles per hour to his pitches with the right mechanical adjustments.

RP | Frank Francisco | New York Mets | Injury, Fantasy,
New York Mets RP Frank Francisco (elbow) made 25 tosses from 60 feet on flat ground Monday, Feb. 25, and manager Terry Collins said Francisco will advance to 70 feet Wednesday, Feb. 27. "It's a step forward, for sure," Collins said. "The swelling has subsided. The discomfort has subsided. And so now we've got to take these gradual baby steps as we get closer to getting him back to where he needs to be. ... We have a thing in the organization where basically, before he can get on the mound, we'd like him to get to 150 feet. When he gets there, then we'll get him on the mound."
